Tetraethyl orthosilicate-containing dispersion coating — water vapor and liquid water barrier properties, TAPPI Journal September 2021
ABSTRACT: An aqueous styrene-butadiene latex dispersion coating containing in-situ processed tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) applied on paperboard demonstrated improved water barrier performance. Coatings containing TEOS equivalent to 0.8% silicon dioxide (SiO2; dry basis) exhibited water vapor performance of < 25 g/m2/day (23°C, 50% relative humidity [RH]) and liquid water barrier performance Cobb 1800 s of < 6 g/m2, when applied as a single-layer 18 g/m2 coating. Cobb 1800 s barrier performance was still good (< 11 g/m2) at coat weights of 7•10 g/m2. The use of filler materials such as kaolin improved the vapor barrier properties of the coating, but this was not critical to the liquid water barrier properties.

Toward environmental resilience in pulp and paper manufacturing: Water consumption and carbon dioxide emission reductions, TAPPI Journal September 2025
ABSTRACT: Pulp and paper manufacturing is a water- and energy-intensive industrial sector, necessitating improvement of its operational efficiency, as well as reduction of emissions to the maximum extent possible. This review focuses on the reduction of water consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that originate in the pulp and paper industry (PPI). First, process simulation and optimization techniques used for water consumption reduction are reviewed. Then, techno-economic analyses of solvent-based CO2 capture from PPI are discussed. Additionally, key actions are proposed for enhancing water consumption reduction and CO2 capture in PPI.

Editorial: Special issue on Paper Physics highlights continued focus on packaging, TAPPI Journal August 2025
ABSTRACT: It is a great pleasure to present this special issue of TAPPI Journal, featuring papers from the 2024 International Paper Physics Conference (IPPC) that have been peer-reviewed for publication in this journal. The conference was held in Wuppertal, Germany, from September 30 to October 2, 2024. This IPPC series is one component of the annual meeting of the International Paper Physics Committee and community, complementing the Fundamental Research Symposia established in 1957 — and the Progress in Paper Physics meetings.

19th European PLACE Conference highlights challenges of balancing sustainability with product protection, TAPPI Journal July 2025
ABSTRACT: The European PLACE (Polymers, Laminates, Adhesives, Coatings and Extrusion) Committee was founded in 2023 with the goal of continuing a biennial conference for the flexible packaging and converting industry, including converters, OEMs, raw materials suppliers, and academia. Previous iterations of the PLACE Conference were organized by TAPPI, but the new European Place Committee has now found a home within bdvi e.V. (Bund Deutscher Verpackungsingenieure), which is the Association of German Packaging Engineers, a registered nonprofit organization.

Continuous digester rapid thinning, TAPPI Journal June 2024
ABSTRACT: Carbon steel continuous digesters built after the early 1980s are fully stress relieved, so stress corrosion cracking has been less of a concern. However, these newer digesters were designed to run modified cooking processes that have turned out to be much more corrosive than those running with conventional cooking. This corrosion is mainly associated with softwood digesters and appears to be flow related. Average corrosion rates of 40 mil/year are possible on the exposed shell between the wash and extraction screens. The corrosion patterns are visually distinct from surfaces in the upper digester and below the wash screens. This paper goes into practical detail on where it occurs, the causes, visual identification, inspection planning and results evaluation, and finally, how to mitigate this damage, which consists of applying a corrosion resistant barrier. Some discussion on dealing with general corrosion throughout the digester is included.

Editorial: Looking forward, looking back, TAPPI Journal January 2022
ABSTRACT: Much like 2020, 2021 was another year of remarkable highs and lows delivered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccines, variants, and infection surges altered the way we behaved personally and professionally last year. As we move into 2022, we are now grappling with health and business concerns from the omicron variant that has overwhelmed hospitals in some areas and contributed to a global supply chain crisis. The ability to adjust has once again become a key skill in adapting to our shifting “new normal.”

Editorial: Agility and adaptation in a dynamic business world, TAPPI Journal January 2021
ABSTRACT: As we move into 2020, it's interesting to look back at the research topics that were covered in TAPPI Journal (TJ) the previous year. Members of the TJ editorial board organized diverse special issues on lignin, coating ,forming, and diverse papermaking and biorefinery topics, which are discussed in the following sections.
