Controllable anisotropic properties of wet-laid hydroentangled nonwovens, TAPPI Journal March 2019

ABSTRACT: For nonwovens, fiber orientation distribution is an important structural characteristic that directly influences the anisotropic properties of the materials. Different Vslurry/Vbelt ratios were adopted to fabricate nonwovens during the wet-laid process. The results indicated that fiber orientation distribution of nonwovens can be regulated by adopting different Vslurry/Vbelt ratios owing to the web-forming principle of wet-laid techniques. Mechanical tests showed that both wet and dry tensile strength of nonwovens in different angle directions present anisotropy under different Vslurry/Vbelt ratio parameters. A liquid spreading distribution experiment proved that liquid spreading length and area of nonwovens could be manipulated using different Vslurry/Vbelt ratios in the fabrication process. Therefore, specific anisotropic properties of wet-laid hydroentangled nonwovens can be realized by controlling the process parameters for particular end-use applications.

Editorial: Diverse content characterizes PaperCon 2019, TAPPI Journal November 2019

ABSTRACT: PaperCon 2019 was held from May 5-8 in Indianapolis, IN. Many of us visiting Indianapolis had little or no perception of the area beyond, of course, race cars and good sports teams. We also found a lovely, walkable downtown with a myriad of restaurants, parks, historic sites, and state government. As with the diverse offerings of PaperCon 2019’s host city of Indianapolis, the conference technical program was exceptionally broad this year. In this special issue of TAPPI Journal, we share both the breadth and quality of the content presented at PaperCon 2019 through peer-reviewed papers from the conference, as described below.

Editorial: TAPPI Journal 2019 Best Research Paper runner-up focuses on persistent issue of cracking at the fold in coated papers, TAPPI Journal May 2020

ABSTRACT: TAPPI and the TAPPI Journal (TJ) Editorial Board would like congratulate the authors of the runner-up paper to the 2019 TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper Award: Seyyed Mohammad Hashemi Dajan, Douglas W. Bousfield, and Mehdi Tajvidi. Their paper: "Cracking at the fold in double layer coated paper the influence of latex and starch composition," appeared on p. 93 of the February 2019 issue. This coating research was recognized by the TJ Editorial Board for its innovation, creativity, scientific merit, and clear expression of ideas.

Editorial: Design considerations for developing high-quality flexible packaging laminates, TAPPI Journal July 2025

ABSTRACT: The global flexible packaging industry has constantly evolved by developing new materials, film design, polymer processing techniques, and machinery to overcome challenges posed by consumer demands, regulation, and societal pressure. While achieving superior quality and improved mechanical film attributes has always been the cornerstone for new technical developments in this industry, the end-of life shortcoming for most plastic films has driven the value chain to strive harder to design and develop sustainable packaging structures.
