Editorial: Looking forward, looking back, TAPPI Journal January 2022
ABSTRACT: Much like 2020, 2021 was another year of remarkable highs and lows delivered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccines, variants, and infection surges altered the way we behaved personally and professionally last year. As we move into 2022, we are now grappling with health and business concerns from the omicron variant that has overwhelmed hospitals in some areas and contributed to a global supply chain crisis. The ability to adjust has once again become a key skill in adapting to our shifting “new normal.”

Editorial: Unlock the gates! TAPPI Journal moves to fully Open Access research for all, TAPPI Journal March 2022
TAPPI and the TAPPI Journal (TJ) Editorial board and staff are pleased to announce that TJ’s content is now immediately open access (OA), with no embargoes. In 2020, the journal had adopted a hybrid OA model wherein its peer-reviewed research was free to TAPPI members for one year and then became free to all on the one-year anniversary of a research paper’s publishing date. Now, research is immediately accessible to all, increasing visibility and engagement for authors and providing an unobstructed view for researchers, students, and other interested parties.

Considerations in managing wastewater odor at pulp and paper operations, TAPPI Journal March 2022
ABSTRACT: Many pulp and paper mills are, at least periodically, faced with the release of odors that can migrate offsite and be considered a nuisance by nearby residents. At chemical pulp mills, perceptible odors associated with reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) are common, many of which are highly perceptible owing to their low odor thresholds. As releases of RSCs and other odorous substances from production processes are progressively controlled, the proportional contribution from wastewater treatment systems to areal odors can increase. This review paper summarizes important fundamentals of odor generation, source identification, and control. Common odorous substances are identified, and mechanisms for their generation are summarized. Approaches for measuring odorous substances are detailed to enable more effective management, and various odor control strategies are discussed.

Editorial: Special coating issue contains highlighted works from TAPPICon 2023, TAPPI Journal November 2023
ABSTRACT: Did you know that TAPPI’s Coating and Graphic Arts Division has changed its name to Coating, Printing, and Surface Enhancement (CPSE) Division? This change occurred mid-year, as our members realized that the new name fits much better with the day-to-day workings of the Division, as well as the broader activities to functionalize and add value to paper and paperboard that continue to expand into new arenas.

Editorial: Transform presentations to TAPPI Journal research papers by following basic steps, TAPPI Journal August 2024
ABSTRACT: Very often, important research findings are communicated in presentation form at industry conferences like those TAPPI holds. While this is a great way to highlight your work, it has some limitations when compared to a peer-reviewed TAPPI Journal paper. Presentations are limited to a specific event, while publishing papers in a peer-reviewed journal means that your work becomes part of scientific literature that is available to a broader audience. Also, a research paper allows for a more detailed explanation of the methods, data, and conclusions than the time-constrained format of a presentation.

Wheat straw as an alternative pulp fiber, TAPPI Journal January 2020
Author: Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: The desire to market sustainable packaging materials has led to an interest in the use of various fiber types as a raw material. It has been suggested that the use of annual crops for partial replacement of wood fiber would result in more sustainable products. Several life cycle analyses (LCA) have been performed to evaluate these claims. These LCAs provided conflicting and contradictory results because of the local conditions and the specific pulping processes investigated. Selected LCAs are reviewed and the underlying reasons for these conflicting results are analyzed.

Guest Editorial: Fifty years with TAPPI: A personal and professional perspective, TAPPI Journal June 2020
ABSTRACT: While reflecting on this being my 50th year in TAPPI, it dwaned on me that my father Murray must also have been a TAPPI member for a similar length of time and that he probably joined TAPPI for the same reasons--we both had just started our first jobs in the pulp and paper industry and wanted to learn ecerything we could about the underlying technology.
