Editorial: AI in Higher Education: Implications for scholarly publishing, TAPPI Journal September 2026
Even as we grapple with the positive and negative implications of artificial intelligence (AI), it has become increasingly embedded in our personal lives and work, including higher education. A recent snapshot of AI’s impact in this area is the Digital Education Council’s (DEC’s) AI in Higher Education Global Survey 2026. Founded in early 2024 to study how AI and digital transformation impact higher education, learning, and workforce skills, DEC is made up of member institutions throughout the world in academia and vocational learning. It currently has more than 200 members in over 42 countries.

Toward environmental resilience in pulp and paper manufacturing: Water consumption and carbon dioxide emission reductions, TAPPI Journal September 2025
ABSTRACT: Pulp and paper manufacturing is a water- and energy-intensive industrial sector, necessitating improvement of its operational efficiency, as well as reduction of emissions to the maximum extent possible. This review focuses on the reduction of water consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that originate in the pulp and paper industry (PPI). First, process simulation and optimization techniques used for water consumption reduction are reviewed. Then, techno-economic analyses of solvent-based CO2 capture from PPI are discussed. Additionally, key actions are proposed for enhancing water consumption reduction and CO2 capture in PPI.

On the usage of online fiber measurements for predicting bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp tensile index — an industrial case, TAPPI Journal July 2022
ABSTRACT: Cellulose pulp’s physical-mechanical properties are determined by laboratory tests obtained from prepared handsheets. However, this procedure is time intensive and presents a lead time until the results are available, hindering its utilization for monitoring and decision-making in a pulp mill. In this context, developing real-time solutions for physical-mechanical properties prediction is fundamental. This work applied a mathematical modeling approach to develop a soft sensor for tensile index monitoring. The mathematical model considers online morphology measurements obtained from the last bleaching stage outlet stream and important process variables for tensile index prediction. The results obtained are satisfactory compared to laboratory results, presenting a mean absolute percentual error of 2.5%, which agrees with the laboratory testing method’s reproducibility.

The Influence of the Fine Structure of Cellulose on the Action of Cellulases, TAPPI Journal June 2022
ABSTRACT: In the hydrolysis of cellulose with enzymes of Aspergillus niger at 47°C., it shown that a great decrease in the rate occurred in the late stage of the reaction, usually with considerable cellulose still reamaining undissolved.

Editorial: The road to sustainable packaging: New research on aqueous barrier coating, TAPPI Journal November 2022
Authors: Joel C. Panek and Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: This TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue looks at hot topic research being done in coatings for paper and paperboard. We can feel the “earth shifting” in paper and paper-board packaging due to the strong call by consumers and brand owners for more sustainable and environmentally friendly options. This is the first TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue to highlight efforts within the paper coating community to produce more sustainable packaging.

Editorial: Vipin Varma joins TJ Editorial Board as expert on environmental and sustainability topics, TAPPI Journal October 2022
ABSTRACT: TAPPI and the TAPPI JOURNAL (TJ) editorial staff would like to welcome a new member to the TJ Editorial Board, Vipin Varma, Ph.D., who is vice president, Manufacturing Programs, at the National Council of Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), headquartered in Cary, NC, USA. NCASI develops technical information that is critical for forest products companies to meet and surpass their environmental and sustainability goals. Vipin will provide expertise on environmental, sustainability, air emissions, and water topics relevant to the pulp and paper industry. In his position on the TJ Editorial Board, he succeeds Paul Wiegand, NCASI’s vice president for Water and Chemical Management Programs, who served from 2007 to 2022.

Fiber-based characterization of pulp refining, TAPPI Journal September 2022
ABSTRACT: Fiber development in pulp refining can be characterized by three parameters: number of impacts on pulp, N; energy per impact, I, and bar force on fibers, F. These parameters enable comparisons of radically different refining conditions; determination of intensity for hardwoods and softwoods; assessment of effect of bar width on fiber shortening; and predictions of tensile strength increases.

Editorial: TAPPI’s ongoing efforts in standards development for the pulp, paper, and related industries, TAPPI Journal February 2025
ABSTRACT: TAPPI has been involved in developing standards for the pulp and paper industry since the 1920s, and those efforts are still going on today with the help of volunteers who propose new standards and review existing ones. Just last year, 30 standards were either reviewed or reaffirmed, and one new standard was developed. There are currently 235 TAPPI Standard Test Methods and nearly 400 volunteers who work on them. These standards are used around the world in laboratories and production situations. Many are used by TAPPI Journal authors to support research efforts and assess results from their experiments, playing an important role in advancing science.
