Designing paper and board barrier constructions for food contact applications, TAPPI Journal November 2025

ABSTRACT: This study examines the effect of multiple factors on barrier performance for purpose-built paper and paperboard constructions produced on an industrial pilot coater machine. Impacts from precoat latex chemistry, application method (flooded nip with bevel blade, jet with bevel blade, and pre-metered film coater, laboratory rod drawdown) and precoating calendering were studied in relation to resulting porosity, roughness, and barrier (liquid water, moisture, and oil). Results reveal a complex interaction between controllable and uncontrollable factors, offering insight for designing advanced barrier coatings on cellulosic substrates.

Improved barrier performance with microfibrillated cellulose, TAPPI Journal March 2025

ABSTRACT: In this work, the impact of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) on the properties of water-based barrier coatings intended for food packaging have been explored. Commercially available MFC was used for improving the rheology and water retention of three different commercially available dispersion coatings (acrylic, styrene acrylic, and polylactic acid). Coatings were applied by rod to paper, and barrier properties were tested by measuring air permeability and water barrier properties. Results clearly showed that addition of MFC to water-based dispersion coatings improved the barrier performance of the final coatings.

Hydrogen peroxide and caustic soda: Dancing with a dragon while bleaching,TAPPI Journal December 2024

Peter W. Hart, Carl Houtman, and Kilby Hirth | TAPPI J. 12(7): 59(2013) - ABSTRACT: When hydrogen peroxide is mixed with caustic soda, an auto-accelerating reaction can lead to generation of significant amounts of heat and oxygen. On the basis of experiments using typical pulp mill process concentration and temperatures, a relatively simple kinetic model has been developed. Evaluation of these model results reveals that hydrogen peroxide-caustic soda systems are extremely sensitive to hydrogen peroxide:caustic soda ratio, transition metal contamination, and temperature. Small changes in initial conditions can result in a closed system becoming explosive. Analysis of model results was used to develop guidelines for safer application of hydrogen peroxide in a mill setting.

Edge crush testing methods and box compression modeling, TAPPI Journal August 2022

ABSTRACT: While multiple test procedures have been developed to assess the inherent compressive strength of corrugated materials (edge crush test, ECT), limited work has explored the appropriateness of each in the context of box compression modeling. This study incorporates a variety of real-world samples, highlighting the varying challenges different ECT methods face in measuring the intrinsic compressive resistance of combined corrugated board. We examine each of these methods as inputs for different types of models, as well as discuss the propagation of measurement variation through the modeling effort. By highlighting the cases in which a given ECT method no longer proves to be an optimal parameter in box compression strength modeling, we explore how we might better measure this material property.

Wet pressing and product quality: Review of previous pilot machine trials, TAPPI Journal July 2020

ABSTRACT: The purpose of wet pressing is to remove water by mechanical means to consolidate the web and minimize the energy expended in the dryer section. In this process, paper is compacted and densified to degrees that impact end-use performance. Average density is increased by pressing, which has implications for grades where stiffness is important. The z-direction density gradients can affect printing and converting. Lastly, pressing affects surface quality of paper and its response to printing. Broadly speaking, the final press nip dominates the paper surface roughness and the early press nips affect printing performance.
