Editorial: The road to sustainable packaging: New research on aqueous barrier coating, TAPPI Journal November 2022
Authors: Joel C. Panek and Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: This TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue looks at hot topic research being done in coatings for paper and paperboard. We can feel the “earth shifting” in paper and paper-board packaging due to the strong call by consumers and brand owners for more sustainable and environmentally friendly options. This is the first TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue to highlight efforts within the paper coating community to produce more sustainable packaging.

Fiber-based characterization of pulp refining, TAPPI Journal September 2022
ABSTRACT: Fiber development in pulp refining can be characterized by three parameters: number of impacts on pulp, N; energy per impact, I, and bar force on fibers, F. These parameters enable comparisons of radically different refining conditions; determination of intensity for hardwoods and softwoods; assessment of effect of bar width on fiber shortening; and predictions of tensile strength increases.

Editorial: Design considerations for developing high-quality flexible packaging laminates, TAPPI Journal July 2025
ABSTRACT: The global flexible packaging industry has constantly evolved by developing new materials, film design, polymer processing techniques, and machinery to overcome challenges posed by consumer demands, regulation, and societal pressure. While achieving superior quality and improved mechanical film attributes has always been the cornerstone for new technical developments in this industry, the end-of life shortcoming for most plastic films has driven the value chain to strive harder to design and develop sustainable packaging structures.
Effects of water hardness (CaCl2 addition) on performance of papermaking additives for fine-particle, TAPPI Journal October 2025
Application: A practical take-away message, based on laboratory testing, is that cationic acrylamide-type retention aid is quite tolerant of different water hardness conditions. Such products can promote both retention and drainage in paper machine systems even when operating under very low or very high water hardness conditions, as are often found at mill sites in different regions.

Editorial: Snapshot from the pandemic: TAPPI Journal Editorial Board shares their experiences, TAPPI Journal April 2020
ABSTRACT: In this most serious time of the global COVID-19 pandemic, I and TAPPI staff have been fortunate to work remotely and practice social distancing. The same goes for our Editorial Board. Still, the business of papermaking has continued, and those on our Board who support the industry through their work and research have had to make adjustments. Here, members of the Editorial Board share their experiences of working during the pandemic. As we all anticipate returning to a new normal that once again allows face-to-face interaction, we hope our TAPPI Journal readers stay safe and healthy as we all personally and professionally navigate this challenging time.

Editorial: TAPPI Journal 2018 Best Research Paper delves deeper into press section rewet to address drying efficiency, TAPPI Journal March 2019
ABSTRACT: TAPPI and the TAPPI Journal (TJ) Editorial Board would like to congratulate the authors of the 2018 TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper Award: J. David “Dave” McDonald and Richard J. “Dick” Kerekes. Their paper, “Rewet in wet pressing of pa-per,” appeared on p. 479 of the September 2018 issue. This research was recognized by the Editorial Board for its in-novation, creativity, scientific merit, and clear expression of ideas.

Assessing variation in package modeling, TAPPI Journal April 2021
ABSTRACT: Predictions from empirical models are affected by variability in the input parameters for the data set used to build the models. For corrugated boxes, the difference between actual and modeled compression strength creates a real cost associated with box production, often resulting in boxes that may need to be over-designed to compensate for a lack of model precision. No work to date has attempted to assess the limitation in these compression estimates due to input parameter testing variability. In this paper we approach that problem, initially for the McKee equation and then conceptually for other box models. For our industry to do a better job at meeting the needs of our corrugated packaging customers, we need to reduce the variation in the tests we all rely on, particularly for evaluating material strength (edge crush test [ECT]) and package compression performance (box compression test [BCT]).
