Guest Editorial: Nonwovens industry responds to COVID-19 challenge, TAPPI Journal October 2020

ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has challenged the whole world to prepare for and respond to a health crisis. While the world had previously focused on addressing challenges such as climate change, income disparity, and peace, this novel coronavirus introduced a new set of challenges not seen in 100 years.

Editorial: Risks and rewards of research during a pandemic, TAPPI Journal August 2020

ABSTRACT: For universities and research institutions, the arrival of Covid-19 last spring halted activities around the world while exposing the need for detailed Public Health Emergency (PHE) plans to cope with a highly-contagious virus in laboratory and classroom settings. As classroom work switched to online platforms like Zoom, the reality set in that long-term plans were needed to safely keep students learning, research flowing, and universities financially stable.

Modeling of the energy of a smelt-water explosion in the recovery boiler dissolving tank, TAPPI Journal August 2020

ABSTRACT: The explosion energy generated as molten smelt droplets interact with water was evaluated as a function of smelt distribution, water temperature, and smelt temperature using a thermodynamic model. The results show that increasing smelt-to-water volume ratio and water temperature significantly increases the explosion energy, converting a larger proportion of the thermal energy of smelt into mechanical work. To reduce the chance of violent smelt-water explosions, it is important to: i) optimize the shatter jet design and operation to uniformly distribute the smelt over a large area in the dissolving tank; ii) avoid high green liquor temperature and ensure adequate liquor mixing; and iii) avoid upsets that may cause heavy smelt runoff or jellyroll smelt.

Guest Editorial: Fifty years with TAPPI: A personal and professional perspective, TAPPI Journal June 2020

ABSTRACT: While reflecting on this being my 50th year in TAPPI, it dwaned on me that my father Murray must also have been a TAPPI member for a similar length of time and that he probably joined TAPPI for the same reasons--we both had just started our first jobs in the pulp and paper industry and wanted to learn ecerything we could about the underlying technology.

Alternative “green” lime kiln fuels: Part II—Woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification, and hydrogen, TAPPI Journal May 2020

ABSTRACT: This paper is the second of a two-part series on “green” lime kiln fuels. The first part of this work reviews the use of pulp mill and recovery byproducts as either full or partial replacement of oil or natural gas in the kiln. The second part reviews the use of various forms of woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification and hydrogen as potential carbon neutral or carbon-free lime kiln fuels. Several of these options require specialized burners to supply the fuel to the kiln and high-quality metallurgy to withstand the acidic conditions of the fuel.

Editorial: TAPPI Journal goes Open Access in 2020, TAPPI Journal October 2019

ABSTRACT: Scientific publishing has changed significantly since the 1990s with the evoluation of the internet, which has largely migrated journals from subscription-based print publications to online content like eBooks, portable document formats (PDFI's), and web-based HTML files. Along with these changes in format has come a growing trend for online journal content to be either partially or fully "Open Access" (OA) so that more institutions and individuals can take full advantage of scholarly literature without a subscription of society membership status.

Real-time monitoring of bubble size distribution in a foam forming process, TAPPI JOURNAL August 2019

ABSTRACT: Foam forming is an intricate option to lessen fiber flocculation and to get better energy and water efficiency when making fiber-based products. Developed during the 1970s, this approach has recently received renewed attention, mainly because it also offers possibilities to widen the fiber-based product portfolios with novel and more valuable products. In addition to air content, bubble size is the most important property of foam. Foam quality control is essential for building real-world foam forming processes. In this work, we show how bubble size can be monitored with direct optical imaging in real time in real process conditions, and how such analysis helps adjust foam quality and discover process faults in foam forming.

Editorial: Let's talk tissue!, TAPPI Journal July 2019

ABSTRACT: In this issue of TAPPI Journal (TJ), researchers Olejnik and Pelczynski of Lodz University of Technology in Poland and researcher Bloch of the University of Gre-noble Alpes in France use an experimental device to measure the liquid absorption properties of tissue (p. 417). The device, called the eXtended liquid penetration analyzer (XLPA), was initially built at the Institute of Papermaking and Printing at the University of Lodz. Results from the study published here showed that the XLPA measurements were in good agreement with the ISO 12625:-8:2010 standard measurements. The researchers believe this method could ultimately help mills characterize the liquid absorption of their tissue in a better and faster manner.
