Editorial: TAPPI Journal 2019 Best Research Paper runner-up focuses on persistent issue of cracking at the fold in coated papers, TAPPI Journal May 2020
ABSTRACT: TAPPI and the TAPPI Journal (TJ) Editorial Board would like congratulate the authors of the runner-up paper to the 2019 TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper Award: Seyyed Mohammad Hashemi Dajan, Douglas W. Bousfield, and Mehdi Tajvidi. Their paper: "Cracking at the fold in double layer coated paper the influence of latex and starch composition," appeared on p. 93 of the February 2019 issue. This coating research was recognized by the TJ Editorial Board for its innovation, creativity, scientific merit, and clear expression of ideas.

Alternative “green” lime kiln fuels: Part I—Pulping/recovery byproducts, TAPPI Journal May 2020
ABSTRACT: This paper is the first of a two-part series on “green” lime kiln fuels. The first part of this work reviews the use of pulp mill and recovery byproducts as either full or partial replacement of oil or natural gas in the kiln. The second part reviews the use of various forms of woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification, and hydrogen as potential carbon neutral or carbon-free lime kiln fuels.

On-machine visible dirt measurement on moving sheets and the relationships to standard laboratory methods, TAPPI Journal August 2020
ABSTRACT: There has been a proliferation of new sensors to measure on-machine dirt specks that employ different technologies and methodologies to perform measurements. The differences in the on-machine technologies are discussed in terms of the TAPPI and ISO standard laboratory test methods with respect to dirt detection using light reflected from, or light transmitted through, the sheet. Also discussed are the requirements for measuring sta-tistically representative areas of the sheet; the difference between the dirt physical size and Equivalent Black Area (EBA) size; and the implication of these issues when specifying cleanliness acceptance criteria. This technical brief describes on-machine visible dirt measurement’s relationship to standard laboratory testing.

Relating bending stiffness measurements across various free span lengths, TAPPI Journal August 2020
ABSTRACT: Bending stiffness should be an intrinsic property of a material, so it is puzzling that the TAPPI Standard Test Method T 836 “Bending stiffness, four point method” specifies span lengths when testing different types of corrugated fiberboard. These specified spans often limit the samples that can be measured with this method. To better understand the relationship between bending stiffness and span length, we performed measurements on a range of materials at different spans. The results provide a practical tool enabling comparison of bending stiffness measurements made at various span lengths. Additionally, this note discusses several areas that could serve as the foundation for more fundamental work exploring the bending behavior of corrugated board.

Edge crush testing methods and box compression modeling, TAPPI Journal August 2022
ABSTRACT: While multiple test procedures have been developed to assess the inherent compressive strength of corrugated materials (edge crush test, ECT), limited work has explored the appropriateness of each in the context of box compression modeling. This study incorporates a variety of real-world samples, highlighting the varying challenges different ECT methods face in measuring the intrinsic compressive resistance of combined corrugated board. We examine each of these methods as inputs for different types of models, as well as discuss the propagation of measurement variation through the modeling effort. By highlighting the cases in which a given ECT method no longer proves to be an optimal parameter in box compression strength modeling, we explore how we might better measure this material property.

Editorial: The road to sustainable packaging: New research on aqueous barrier coating, TAPPI Journal November 2022
Authors: Joel C. Panek and Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: This TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue looks at hot topic research being done in coatings for paper and paperboard. We can feel the “earth shifting” in paper and paper-board packaging due to the strong call by consumers and brand owners for more sustainable and environmentally friendly options. This is the first TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue to highlight efforts within the paper coating community to produce more sustainable packaging.

Editorial: Vipin Varma joins TJ Editorial Board as expert on environmental and sustainability topics, TAPPI Journal October 2022
ABSTRACT: TAPPI and the TAPPI JOURNAL (TJ) editorial staff would like to welcome a new member to the TJ Editorial Board, Vipin Varma, Ph.D., who is vice president, Manufacturing Programs, at the National Council of Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), headquartered in Cary, NC, USA. NCASI develops technical information that is critical for forest products companies to meet and surpass their environmental and sustainability goals. Vipin will provide expertise on environmental, sustainability, air emissions, and water topics relevant to the pulp and paper industry. In his position on the TJ Editorial Board, he succeeds Paul Wiegand, NCASI’s vice president for Water and Chemical Management Programs, who served from 2007 to 2022.
