Lignin carbohydrate complex studies during kraft pulping for producing paper grade pulp from birch, TAPPI Journal September 2020

ABSTRACT: Paper grade pulp production across the globe is dominated by the kraft process using different lignocellulosic raw materials. Delignification is achieved around 90% using different chemical treatments. A bottleneck for complete delignification is the presence of residual covalent bonds that prevail between lignin and carbohydrate even after severe chemical pulping and oxygen delignification steps. Different covalent bonds are present in native wood that sustain drastic pulping conditions. In this study, 100% birch wood was used for producing paper grade pulp, and the lignin carbohydrate bonds were analyzed at different stages of the kraft cook. The lignin carbohydrate bonds that were responsible for residual lignin retention in unbleached pulp were compared and analyzed with the original lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) bonds in native birch wood. It was shown that lignin remaining after pulping and oxygen delignification was mainly bound to xylan, whereas the lignin bound to glucomannan was for the most part degraded.

Quantification of vegetable oil in recycled paper, TAPPI JOURNAL September 2020

ABSTRACT: Vegetable soybean oil is commonly used in cooking foods that are packaged in takeaway paper-board containers. Vegetable oil is hydrophobic, and in sufficiently high concentration, could interfere with interfiber bonding and result in paper strength loss. In order to quantify the effect of oil on the resulting paperboard strength, it is necessary to quantify the oil content in paper. A lab method was evaluated to determine the soybean oil content in paper. Handsheets were made with pulps previously treated with different proportions of vegetable oil. Pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (pyGCMS) was used to quantify the amount of oil left in the handsheets. The results revealed a strong correlation between the amount of oil applied to the initial pulp and the amount of oil left in the handsheets.In addition, the effect of vegetable oils on paper strength may be affected by the cooking process. Vegetable oil is known to degrade over time in the presence of oxygen, light, and temperature. The vegetable oil was put in an oven to imitate the oil lifecycle during a typical pizza cooking process. The cooked oil was then left at room temperature and not protected from air (oxygen) or from normal daylight. The heated, then cooled, oil was stored over a period of 13 weeks. During this time, samples of the aged oil were tested as part of a time-based degradation study of the cooked and cooled oil.

Recycling performance of softwood and hardwood unbleached kraft pulps for packaging papers, TAPPI Journal February 2023

ABSTRACT: The scope of this work is to evaluate the recyclability potential of hardwood and softwood unbleached kraft pulps, leading to a sound basis for comparison and even to support a decision about fibers accord-ing to the performance achieved. The influence of successive recycling cycles (up to 10 cycles) on the fiber morphol-ogy, pulp suspension drainability, water retention capacity, and handsheet mechanical properties were studied for Eucalyptus globulus and Pinus sylvestris unbleached kraft pulps. The performance of these pulps as linerboard and corrugating medium for packaging was also evaluated. The requirements for brown kraftliner and for high perfor-mance recycled fluting grades is preserved for E. globulus pulp during all 10 recycling cycles, evidenced by the mod-erate decrease of burst index and crush resistance index and by the short-span compression index, whereas the P. sylvestris pulp loses this rating after the second cycle. These results strongly support the higher performance of E. globulus pulp for recycling as compared with softwood kraft pulp from the perspective of packaging papers.

A fast and non-destructive alternative to the burnout method for paperboard quality inspections using phase-contrast X-ray imaging, TAPPI Journal February 2023

ABSTRACT: An X-ray based quality inspection method for paperboard was implemented and tested as a fast and non-destructive alternative to the burnout method. An argument against X-ray imaging for inspection of paper and paperboard has been that X-ray absorption is low in paper. To overcome this limitation, we used phase-contrast X-ray imaging (PCXI), which gives higher contrast than conventional attenuation-based imaging for low-absorbing materials such as paper. The suggested PCXI method was applied to previously prepared and quality rated samples using the burnout method. A strong similarity between the burnout images and the PCXI images was observed. In conclusion, further development of the phase-contrast X-ray method would provide an interesting option for replacing or complementing the standard burnout method.

ABSTRACT: Laboratory experiments with bleached kraft furnish were carried out to quantify the effects of major differences in electrical conductivity of papermaking process water (due to the addition of sodium sulfate) on the performance of various papermaking additives. Batches of refined pulp were prepared with conductivity levels of 168 (tap water), 1000, and 10,000 ìS/cm. The absolute values of the calculated zeta potential, in various cases, were shown to decrease with increasing logarithm of electrical conductivity. The performance of retention aid systems, including cationic polyacrylamide (cPAM), were not adversely affected by increased salinity, even up to an electrical conductivity level of 10,000 ìS/cm. In fact, treatment involving sequential addition of cPAM and colloidal silica showed superior retention of mineral filler at the highest conductivity level. Likewise, combinations of papermaking additives that promote the dewatering of paper continued to perform well in furnish prepared with increasing salinity. The ability of various chemical systems to induce flocculation among papermaking fibers decreased moderately at the highest level of salinity considered.

ABSTRACT: Water hardness, which can be defined as the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions, is known to vary greatly depending on geographical locations. Laboratory tests were carried out to evaluate effects of large differences in water hardness on the performance of certain wet-end additives to the paper machine process. Tests were carried out at hardness levels of 25, 125, and 225 ppm (as calcium carbonate equivalents). Increased water hardness was found to have a generally negative effect on the performance of a cationic acrylamide- type retention aid, although the extent of performance loss depended on experimental details. Likewise, rates of dewatering in systems containing cationic retention aid were adversely affected by increasing hardness, though the effects were not statistically significant in all cases considered. The tendency of bridge-forming flocculants (cationic retention aid or sequential addition of a cationic additive and then anionic retention aid) fell slightly with increasing water hardness.
