Editorial: Honoring the contributions of Dr. Mahendra Doshi
n this column, we would like to recognize the contributions to TAPPI and TAPPI Journal made by Dr. Mahendra Doshi, who passed away in April. A long-time member of TAPPI and a TAPPI Journal Editorial Board Member for many years, he is recognized for his research in screening system analysis, wax, and stickies removal in the field of recycling. Doshi was a pioneer in stickies classification and measurement methods for macro and micro stickies. During his career, he consulted with paper mills all over the world, providing mills with solutions for deinking, wax, stickies, yield, dirt count, and brightness.

Editorial: Transform presentations to TAPPI Journal research papers by following basic steps, TAPPI Journal August 2024
ABSTRACT: Very often, important research findings are communicated in presentation form at industry conferences like those TAPPI holds. While this is a great way to highlight your work, it has some limitations when compared to a peer-reviewed TAPPI Journal paper. Presentations are limited to a specific event, while publishing papers in a peer-reviewed journal means that your work becomes part of scientific literature that is available to a broader audience. Also, a research paper allows for a more detailed explanation of the methods, data, and conclusions than the time-constrained format of a presentation.

Anthraquinone pulping of kudzu (pueraria lobata), TAPPI Journal December 2024
Authors: Peter W. Hart, Brian N. Brogdon, and Jeffrey S. Hsieh | TAPPI J. 76(4): 162(1993) - ABSTRACT: Kudzu was pulped underpulping conditions for kraft, kraft-AQ, soda, and soda-AQ processes. Anthraquinone addition increlased the carbohydrate content of the brownstock pulp for all cooks. Anthraquinone addition lowered the broumrtock kappa number while reducing the chemical demand. Brownstock ~om selected pulping sequences was tested to determine tear strength, tensile strength, burst strength, and~eeness. The broumstock was also subjected to a CED bleaching sequence. For the bleached pulps, viscosity and average fiber length were determined.

Reducing aox by increasing oxidation potential in the first caustic extraction stage, TAPPI Journal December 2024
Authors: Peter W. Hart and Jeffrey S. Hsieh | Tappi J. 74(11): 117(1991) - ABSTRACT: An increase in the standard oxidation potential of the reinforcing agent in the first caustic extraction stage will reduce the amount of AOX in the stage's effluent. A chlorinated broumstock pulp was treated alternatively in a basic caustic extraction (E) stage, an oxygen-reinforced caustic extraction (EO) stage, and an extraction stage reinforced with oxygen and peroxide (EOP). An AOX reduction of up to 30% was obtained in the effluent from the peroxide-reinforced extraction stage. In addition to the brownstock work, using two different model lignin compounds, we ran tests using oxyen, potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide with oxygen, and ozone with oxygen-reinforced caustic stages. In all cases, increasing the oxidation potential of the reinforcing agent decreased the amount of AOX detected in the effluent.

Toward environmental resilience in pulp and paper manufacturing: Water consumption and carbon dioxide emission reductions, TAPPI Journal September 2025
ABSTRACT: Pulp and paper manufacturing is a water- and energy-intensive industrial sector, necessitating improvement of its operational efficiency, as well as reduction of emissions to the maximum extent possible. This review focuses on the reduction of water consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that originate in the pulp and paper industry (PPI). First, process simulation and optimization techniques used for water consumption reduction are reviewed. Then, techno-economic analyses of solvent-based CO2 capture from PPI are discussed. Additionally, key actions are proposed for enhancing water consumption reduction and CO2 capture in PPI.
