Wheat straw as an alternative pulp fiber, TAPPI Journal January 2020
Author: Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: The desire to market sustainable packaging materials has led to an interest in the use of various fiber types as a raw material. It has been suggested that the use of annual crops for partial replacement of wood fiber would result in more sustainable products. Several life cycle analyses (LCA) have been performed to evaluate these claims. These LCAs provided conflicting and contradictory results because of the local conditions and the specific pulping processes investigated. Selected LCAs are reviewed and the underlying reasons for these conflicting results are analyzed.

Production of antimicrobial paper using nanosilver, nanocellulose, and chitosan from a coronavirus perspective, TAPPI Journal July 2021
ABSTRACT: The pulp and paper industry has an opportunity to play a vital role in breaking the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic through production that supports widespread use of antimicrobial paper. This paper provides a brief review of paper and paper-related industries, such as those producing relevant additives, and R&D organizations that are actively engaged in developing antimicrobial papers. The focus here is on the potential of three nano-additives for use in production of antimicrobial papers that combat coronavirus: nanosilver, nanocellulose, and chitosan. Various recent developments in relevant areas and concepts underlining the fight against coronavirus are also covered, as are related terms and concepts.

Guest Editorial: Research and development in the post COVID-19 era, TAPPI Journal June 2021
Science and technology occupy prominent roles in solving global problems. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of science regarding decision-making, saving lives, and safeguarding the environment. While information technology (IT) and IT-based tools have garnered much needed attention in the past few decades, other areas such as manufacturing engineering, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals are finding their right places in gaining public and political support and attention--thanks to COVID-19! Such public attention has highlighted vulnerabilities due to lack of investments in manufacturing and materials engineering, as well as the need for strategic investments in these areas.

Determining operating variables that impact internal fiber bonding using Wedge statistical analysis methods, TAPPI Journal November 2021
ABSTRACT: In this study, Wedge statistical analysis tools were used to collect, collate, clean up, plot, and analyze several years of operational data from a commercial paper machine. The z-direction tensile (ZDT) and Scott Bond tests were chosen as representative of fiber bond strength. After analyzing thousands of operational parameters, the ones with the most significant impact upon ZDT involved starch application method, starch penetration, and the amount of starch applied. Scott bond was found to be significantly impacted by formation and refining. Final calendering of the paper web has also shown an impact on internal fiber bonding.

Editorial: Looking forward, looking back, TAPPI Journal January 2022
ABSTRACT: Much like 2020, 2021 was another year of remarkable highs and lows delivered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccines, variants, and infection surges altered the way we behaved personally and professionally last year. As we move into 2022, we are now grappling with health and business concerns from the omicron variant that has overwhelmed hospitals in some areas and contributed to a global supply chain crisis. The ability to adjust has once again become a key skill in adapting to our shifting “new normal.”
