Editorial: The road to sustainable packaging: New research on aqueous barrier coating, TAPPI Journal November 2022
Authors: Joel C. Panek and Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: This TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue looks at hot topic research being done in coatings for paper and paperboard. We can feel the “earth shifting” in paper and paper-board packaging due to the strong call by consumers and brand owners for more sustainable and environmentally friendly options. This is the first TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue to highlight efforts within the paper coating community to produce more sustainable packaging.

Fiber-based characterization of pulp refining, TAPPI Journal September 2022
ABSTRACT: Fiber development in pulp refining can be characterized by three parameters: number of impacts on pulp, N; energy per impact, I, and bar force on fibers, F. These parameters enable comparisons of radically different refining conditions; determination of intensity for hardwoods and softwoods; assessment of effect of bar width on fiber shortening; and predictions of tensile strength increases.

Editorial: TAPPI Standards development: Authors and reviewers are welcome, TAPPI Journal July 2021
ABSTRACXT: Readers of TAPPI Journal (TJ) and those involved with R&D and process and product quality will be familiar with TAPPI Standard Test Methods. These test methods are necessary for validating research and ensuring the quality of end products. In addition to test methods, TAPPI also publishes information that isn’t directly related to test methods, such as technical information and definitions, which include specifications, guidelines, and glossaries. All Standards information is developed with the consensus of a technical working group that adheres to set procedures.

Editorial: Explore the experience of this year’s virtual PEERS Conference, TAPPI Journal September 2020
ABSTRACT: Since impacts from the pandemic took hold this past March, we’ve all begun to truly ap-preciate safe in-person interaction with others. Whether it’s a trip to the grocery, visiting elderly parents, instructing students, or networking with colleagues, no direct contact is simple, so we’ve learned to negotiate virtual gatherings in a way we never dreamed would be important at the start of 2020.

The winding mechanics of laminate webs, TAPPI Journal February 2020
ABSTRACT: Models that describe the residual stresses due to winding single-layer webs at the end of roll-to-roll manufacturing machines are mature. These models have been used to reduce or avoid defects that are due to winding. Many laminated products exist where two or more webs have been joined to form a thicker composite web. The properties of the web layers provide a unique functionality to the product being manufactured. No laminate winding models exist in the literature. This paper will focus on the development of a laminate winding model and laboratory test verification of the model.

Multifunctional starch-based barrier materials, TAPPI Journal August 2021
ABSTRACT: Natural and renewable polymer-based barrier materials play an inevitable role in a sustainable economy. Most commercially available barrier materials are either based on multiple layers of synthetic polymers or petroleum-based chemicals. Tremendous amounts of research are being done in academia and industry to replace these synthetic barrier materials with natural and environmentally friendly materials. The current work summarizes the application of starch-based materials for various barrier applications, such as water vapor, oxygen, liquid water, oil, and grease. Also, exotic starch-based barrier materials for the application of sound, ultraviolet, and thermal barrier applications are reviewed. The potential of starch-based materials to offer antimicrobial and antiviral properties is discussed. Finally, commercially available starch-based barrier materials have been summarized.
