The winding mechanics of laminate webs, TAPPI Journal February 2020

ABSTRACT: Models that describe the residual stresses due to winding single-layer webs at the end of roll-to-roll manufacturing machines are mature. These models have been used to reduce or avoid defects that are due to winding. Many laminated products exist where two or more webs have been joined to form a thicker composite web. The properties of the web layers provide a unique functionality to the product being manufactured. No laminate winding models exist in the literature. This paper will focus on the development of a laminate winding model and laboratory test verification of the model.

Guest Editorial: Still working (overtime): Life-saving nonwovens and continued innovation, TAPPI Journal August 2021

ABSTRACT: Recently, the United States federal government has recommended the need for a booster shot to combat COVID-19, highlighting the highly contagious nature of its Delta variant. This variant is surging in countries as far apart as Thailand, Brazil, and the United States. While the availability of the vaccine is not an issue in the United States, African, Latin American, and South Asian countries are in dire need of the vaccine. This scenario necessitates the need for continued safety measures. Among the recommended safety measures, use of face masks has been proven to be effective. Recent analysis showed that two-thirds of the 32 states in the United States with face mask mandates found them helpful for lowering infection rates.

Mechanical modification of softwood pulp fibers using a novel lightweight vertical bar plate, TAPPI Journal April 2021

ABSTRACT: Refiner plates made using sand casting have a draft angle, which results in a trapezoidal bar shape. These trapezoidal bar plates have a limited throughput compared to the vertical bar plates, and eventually the edges of the bars become dull, resulting in longer time to reach the target freeness and shorter service life. The new light-weight refiner plate with a bar insertion method into a plate base was developed by selecting an aluminium-based alloy as the plate base material and a stainless steel alloy with high wear resistance as the bar material. The light-weight plate with sharp bar edges was very effective in reducing refining energy by reaching the target freeness faster than the sand-cast bar plate. Finally, the lightweight sharp bar plate, which weighed only about half the weight of the cast bar plate, was expected to significantly contribute to easy replacement, improved paper quality, and larger throughput without excessive loss of fiber length.

Application of fuzzy TOPSIS in the Analyze phase of the DMAIC cycle to aid decision-making, TAPPI Journal April 2020

ABSTRACT: This paper reports the use of multicriteria analysis in the Analyze phase of the DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) cycle for continuous improvement. The research was carried out in a tissue paper factory located in southern Brazil. A sample of 64 parts of 16 different reels of recycled paper was used. A problem regarding paper quality variability was detected, presenting a scrap index ranging between 9% and 23%, compromising machine productivity and product sales. This motivated the implementation of a structured project supported by the application of the DMAIC cycle. The project team (machine operators, maintenance staff, supervisor, and data analyst) defined the evaluation criteria and determined the control intervals and their equivalence with linguistic variables to support the necessary evaluations for the application of fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution). The criteria were C1-Longitudinal Strength (Kgf), C2-Longitudinal Elongation (mm), C3-Cross-strength (kgf), C4-Cross-elongation (mm), C5-Weight (g/m²), and C6-Humidity (%). The results showed that samples with the same ranking had the lowest scrap indexes in the subsequent process. Also, the criterion C5 had a more significant impact on the quality of the product than the other criteria, which was determined from the DMAIC sequence. Improvements related to C5 should be prioritized. The fuzzy TOPSIS method presented is a flexible tool, adapting itself to the solution of the problem and contributing to the decision-making process.

Multifunctional starch-based barrier materials, TAPPI Journal August 2021

ABSTRACT: Natural and renewable polymer-based barrier materials play an inevitable role in a sustainable economy. Most commercially available barrier materials are either based on multiple layers of synthetic polymers or petroleum-based chemicals. Tremendous amounts of research are being done in academia and industry to replace these synthetic barrier materials with natural and environmentally friendly materials. The current work summarizes the application of starch-based materials for various barrier applications, such as water vapor, oxygen, liquid water, oil, and grease. Also, exotic starch-based barrier materials for the application of sound, ultraviolet, and thermal barrier applications are reviewed. The potential of starch-based materials to offer antimicrobial and antiviral properties is discussed. Finally, commercially available starch-based barrier materials have been summarized.

Mechanistic aspects of nanocellulose•cationic starch•colloidal silica systems for papermaking, TAPPI Journal February 2023

ABSTRACT: Optimization of a chemical additive program for a paper machine can require attention to both colloidal charges and kinetic effects. This work considered an additive program with two negatively charged substances (nanofibrillated cellulose [NFC] and colloidal silica) and two positively charged items (cationic starch and cationic acrylamide copolymer retention aid). Results were shown to depend on charge interactions; however, that clearly was not the whole story. Some findings related to cationic demand, dewatering, fine-particle retention, and flocculation among fibers were best explained in terms of at least partly irreversible complexation interactions between the charged entities. Adjustments in ratios between oppositely charged additives, their sequences of addition, and effects of hydrodynamic shear levels all affected the results. In general, the most promising results were obtained at a cationic starch level of 0.25% to 0.5% based on sheet solids in systems where the cationic starch was used as a pretreatment for NFC.

Setting priorities in CNF particle size measurement: What is needed vs. what is feasible, TAPPI Journal February 2023

ABSTRACT: Measuring the size of cellulose nanomaterials can be challenging, especially in the case of branched and entangled cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). The International Organization for Standardization, Technical Committee 6, Task Group 1—Cellulosic Nanomaterials, is exploring opportunities to develop standard methods for the measurement of CNF particle size and particle size distribution. This paper presents a summary of the available measuring techniques, responses from a survey on the measurement needs of CNF companies and researchers, and outcomes from an international workshop on cellulose nanofibril measurement and standardization. Standardization needs differed among groups, with Japanese companies mostly requiring measurements for product specification and production control, and other companies mostly needing measurements for safety/regulatory purposes and for grade definitions in patents. Among all the companies, average length and width with percen-tiles (D(10), D(50), D(90)) were the most desired measurands. Workshop participants concurred that defining the location(s) on the CNF at which to measure the width and the length is an urgent and complex question. They also agreed that methods are needed for rapid particle size measurement at the nanoscale. Our recommendation within ISO is to start work to revise the definition of CNFs and develop sample preparation and measurement guidelines. It was also recommended that further research be done to reproducibly prepare hierarchical branched CNF structures and characterize them, develop automated image analysis for hierarchical branched CNF structures, and develop a classification system encompassing measurements at multiple size ranges from micro- to nanoscale to fully characterize and distinguish CNF samples.

An analytical method to quantitatively determine the amount of polyamide epichlorohydrin (PAE) in paperboard and white water, TAPPI Journal February 2023,

ABSTRACT: Polyamide epichlorohydrin (PAE) is a permanent wet strength resin. When applied to paperboard, some amount of resin is retained in the sheet, and some is lost to the white water. An analytical method for quantifying the amount of PAE retained in the sheet and lost into the white water has been developed. This method hydrolyzes the PAE to adipic acid, which in turn is derivatized to diethyl adipate and quantified by pyrolysis gas chromatography•mass spectrometry (pyGCMS). In addition, the hydrolysis conditions of the PAE were studied by the Taguchi approach, and PAE material balances around the dry sheet and white water for 3 and 6 lb/ton PAE applications have been performed. The PAE resin recovery was 95.4% with 65.0% in the sheet for the 3 lb/ton PAE-charged paper-board, and the recovery was 96.7% with 36.1% in the sheet for the 6 lb/ton PAE-charged paperboard.

ABSTRACT: With inflation still lingering, global fiduciary regulatory agencies like the U.S. Federal Reserve are handling the issue by hiking base interest rates. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has exposed lagging investments for advanced and agile manufacturing in developed economies in the recent past. Because of this situation, governments have begun taking policy initiatives, such as boosting support for infrastructure in the United States, creating a National Mission on Technical Textiles in India, and many initiatives in the United Kingdom and European Union to boost clean energy, fight climate change, and encourage sustainable manufacturing.
