On the design of corrugated boards: A new FEM modeling and experimental validation, TAPPI Journal August 2025

ABSTRACT: This study presents a simplified finite element modeling (FEM) approach suitable for large structures made of corrugated boards, such as customized packages, based on a homogenization method, which is combined with correction factors for internal mechanisms. The homogenization process reduces computational time by transforming flute geometries into equivalent elastic models. In large deformations and in the presence of contact for a given geometry, the effective elastic modulus in the thickness direction, as well as the effective thickness of the structure, are corrected by two statistical Weibull distributions representing the contact and buckling mechanisms in a corrugated board. The Weibull parameters are obtained via experimental analysis, and such a process is then validated. The results demonstrate that the statistical parameters (â1 = 0.14, â2 = 1.31) can be used for the simplistic representation of corrugated boards, being computationally efficient. This research contributes to the optimization of corrugated packaging design, specifically by simplifying FEM models for faster, yet equally accurate, simulations.

Filtration performance of face masks and facepiece respirators used during COVID-19 pandemic, TAPPI Journal February 2025

ABSTRACT: The rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 has created challenges for societies, healthcare settings, businesses, and institutions. To curb virus transmission, various measures like lockdown, social distancing, hand hygiene, and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPEs), including face masks, have been recommended. Face masks and facepiece respirators are considered to act as barriers against microbial transmission from person to person. In this study, we selected barrier materials used during the COVID-19 pandemic that included four non-medical face masks and three facepiece respirators. Facepiece respirators were distributed by the U.S. Administration through pharmacy outlets. Results showed that facepiece respirator R95 has the highest filtration efficiency (above 99%), which remains more or less the same over different particle sizes. The N95 respirator’s filtration efficiency was lower than that of R95, but its barrier resistance was lower than that of the R95, indicating that it can be comfortably used over longer duration. Face masks were evaluated using ASTM F 3502-24 for their barrier performance. At 0.1 and 0.3 ìm particle size, domestically manufactured masks met the standard for higher performance. Interestingly, the results indicate that quality of raw materials and manufacturing standards play important roles, as is evident in domestically manufactured face mask and facepiece respirators.

Comparison of the application of polysaccharide-based barrier coatings on paper using film press and spray coating, TAPPI Journal January 2025

The growing demand for sustainable packaging has spurred research into biopolymer-based solutions and their application to paper substrates. This study compares the application of low solids, high viscous aqueous solutions of alginate and chitosan on two different paper substrates using a laboratory film press coater and a purpose-built spray coating unit, with a focus on barrier performance and practical industry considerations. Key parameters investigated are air flow rate, water vapor transmission rate, and grease resistance. Results showed that due to the low solids content of the applied biopolymer solutions, film press coating required a double-layer application for coat weights exceeding 4 g/m², making it less viable for industrial application. In contrast, spray coating allowed for higher application weights in a single step. The barrier properties of spray coated samples, compared to film press coatings, varied with the paper substrate: spray coating performed better on one substrate and worse on the other. Contact angle measurement of the substrates suggested that spray coating is more suitable for a more hydrophilic substrate because of improved surface wetting. The study also identified issues with drying conditions and pinholes affecting the quality of spray coated samples, indicating a need for further research to optimize these parameters.

Editorial: Investing in Amercian advanced manufacturing, TAPPI Journal June 2025

ABSTRACT: American manufacturing is seeing a renewal, which is needed to boost jobs in America, particularly in the middle and manufacturing base of the country. The ongoing tariff situation emphasizes the importance of protecting domestic manufacturing. There is U.S. congressional agreement, in principle, to bring back manufacturing to the United States. However, given how the global trade and manufacturing space has shifted in the last four decades, it may not be a comparative advantage to manufacture low margin and labor-intensive products. Officials in the current U.S. Administration have stated that manufacturing of socks and T-shirts is not necessarily in the interest of the United States, but focusing on value-added products is essential. While silicon chips, solar panels, and batteries are key items of interest, advanced textile materials such as those that find applications in industrial products and composites, products that can save human lives, and products for protecting the environment are highly-valued items that cater to national security.

The effect of Stachys floridana Shuttlew.ex Benth extract as an additive on the chemical properties of chitosan biodegradable film, TAPPI Journal June 2025

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to explore chitosan with Stachys floridana Shuttlew. ex Benth (SFSB) extract as an additive to prepare an active film. The effects of the SFSB extract on the physical, antioxidant, and bacteriostatic properties of chitosan biodegradable films were studied. The results showed that the addition of SFSB extract significantly improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film, and its biodegradation rate increased rapidly. Compared to the control film, the water solubility was lower at 19.40%, the expansion degree was higher at 288.90%, the water vapor permeability (WVP) was 0.364 g·mm/(m²·d·kPa), the surface hydrophobicity increased, and the mechanical strength was also improved. The contact angle increased to 89.3°. In addition, as the amount of SFSB increased, the thermal stability of chitosan-Stachys floridana Shuttlew. ex Benth (CS-SFSB) films also increased significantly, and their ultraviolet (UV) blocking ability was gradually enhanced. The results indicate that CS-SFSB has potential as a food packaging material.

A laboratory-scale automated vacuum-assisted device for coating of cellulose nanofibrils onto paper, TAPPI Journal November 2025

ABSTRACT: An automated vacuum-assisted coating system was developed to deposit cellulose nanofibril (CNF) layers onto paper substrates, simulating potential industrial geometries while allowing precise control of web speed (10•20 m/min), vacuum time (up to 30 s), and applicator gap (0.5•0.9 mm). Vacuum assistance makes it possible to obtain coat weights over 5 g/m2 in a single pass and increases solids after coating from less than 10% to over 28%• 30%, reducing drying demand by more than 60%. Coat weights were tuned from 6 to over 11 g/m² by varying suspension solids (0.4•0.6 wt%), line speed, and filtration length (20•40 mm), with strong agreement between experimental data and model predictions. Barrier testing showed Kit test values for double folded samples of 9•12 and Gurley air resistances above 4 × 104 s once coat weights exceeded 7 g/m². Comparable performance was achieved with lower fines content CNF (60%) by increasing coat weight, providing technical flexibility and cost advantages for industrial scale-up.

Influence of base sheet properties on barrier coating performance, TAPPI Journal November 2025

ABSTRACT: Paper packaging offers a sustainable alternative to standard plastic-based materials, particularly for food and beverage applications. With reduced fiber treatment options like fluorochemicals, uncoated base stock often provides little-to-no effective barrier against liquid water, oil/grease, or moisture transmission. Despite the lack of natural barrier performance, base sheet properties can significantly influence the efficiency of applied waterbased barrier coatings. In this study, various base stock properties, such as caliper, porosity, roughness, and ash content, are reported to influence the barrier performance of styrene-acrylic and a copolymer of styrene-butadiene/styrene-acrylate based barrier coatings. These findings will help paper and board producers design better, more cost-effective, purposebuilt substrates for barrier applications in the packaging industry.

Corrugated medium strength assessments in different flute structures, TAPPI Journal April 2026

ABSTRACT: Recent advancements in our ability to evaluate papers and our understanding of the mechanics of box failure have brought a renewed focus on measuring the performance of corrugated medium and an associated evolution of paper measurement approaches. This study evaluates the load curves, Hardness (where the fluted structure’s loading shifts away from an elastic response), and Concora medium crush test (CMT) values for a range of corrugated mediums in different common flute geometries. The shape of the load curve is a function of the geometry of the fluting profile and the relative stiffness of the paper, with smaller flutes and heavier papers reaching both the Hardness value and the ultimate load at lower deformation. Nonetheless, while the specific dynamics during the loading process vary, Hardness and CMT values correlate linearly between flute structures, even when testing specimens after different equilibration periods post-fluting. These correlations confirm the applicability of the standard A-flute CMT test to a broad range of papers and potential combined board flute structures, supporting quality assurance processes for medium production and optimization in corrugated board manufacturing.
