Test method and coating composition impact on measured moisture vapor transmission rate for waterborne coatings on paper, TAPPI Journal November 2024

ABSTRACT: Moisture vapor barrier is one of the necessary performance attributes for paper packages. Two methods are typically employed to assess the moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR): the gravimetric cup method (ASTM E96) and the MOCON method (ASTM F1249). While those tests have been compared for free standing polymeric films, less is understood about their application in coated paper. Our results show that, despite a general agreement between the two methods, discrepancies exist where test protocols and material properties of coated paper impact the MVTR measurement. The measurement discrepancies can be explained by differences in local moisture concentration. Our study provides new insights on moisture vapor barrier assessment of waterborne coatings on paper and implications for achieving paper packages with improved barrier performance.

Evaluation of folding effects on coating damage, TAPPI Journal November 2024

ABSTRACT: Barrier coatings on paperboard need to maintain integrity during converting and end-use for effective barrier performance. Folding is one of the most common deformations during converting; however, factors that affect damage during folding are not well defined. This is partly because methods to fold specimens and characterize damage are not standardized and the results are generally not transferable. In this work, we describe a method to fold paper specimens precisely and reproducibly. The keys to folding include using a defined geometry and controlled deformation. Multiple methods can be used to quantify damage; in this case, we use differences in permeability as a measure of how the coating becomes more open. Damage is sensitive to the degree of compression after the initial folding. Using a shim for support provides a defined amount of compression and minimizes the sensitivity to the applied pressure.

On the design of corrugated boards: A new FEM modeling and experimental validation, TAPPI Journal August 2025

ABSTRACT: This study presents a simplified finite element modeling (FEM) approach suitable for large structures made of corrugated boards, such as customized packages, based on a homogenization method, which is combined with correction factors for internal mechanisms. The homogenization process reduces computational time by transforming flute geometries into equivalent elastic models. In large deformations and in the presence of contact for a given geometry, the effective elastic modulus in the thickness direction, as well as the effective thickness of the structure, are corrected by two statistical Weibull distributions representing the contact and buckling mechanisms in a corrugated board. The Weibull parameters are obtained via experimental analysis, and such a process is then validated. The results demonstrate that the statistical parameters (â1 = 0.14, â2 = 1.31) can be used for the simplistic representation of corrugated boards, being computationally efficient. This research contributes to the optimization of corrugated packaging design, specifically by simplifying FEM models for faster, yet equally accurate, simulations.

Filtration performance of face masks and facepiece respirators used during COVID-19 pandemic, TAPPI Journal February 2025

ABSTRACT: The rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 has created challenges for societies, healthcare settings, businesses, and institutions. To curb virus transmission, various measures like lockdown, social distancing, hand hygiene, and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPEs), including face masks, have been recommended. Face masks and facepiece respirators are considered to act as barriers against microbial transmission from person to person. In this study, we selected barrier materials used during the COVID-19 pandemic that included four non-medical face masks and three facepiece respirators. Facepiece respirators were distributed by the U.S. Administration through pharmacy outlets. Results showed that facepiece respirator R95 has the highest filtration efficiency (above 99%), which remains more or less the same over different particle sizes. The N95 respirator’s filtration efficiency was lower than that of R95, but its barrier resistance was lower than that of the R95, indicating that it can be comfortably used over longer duration. Face masks were evaluated using ASTM F 3502-24 for their barrier performance. At 0.1 and 0.3 ìm particle size, domestically manufactured masks met the standard for higher performance. Interestingly, the results indicate that quality of raw materials and manufacturing standards play important roles, as is evident in domestically manufactured face mask and facepiece respirators.

ABSTRACT: American manufacturing is seeing a renewal, which is needed to boost jobs in America, particularly in the middle and manufacturing base of the country. The ongoing tariff situation emphasizes the importance of protecting domestic manufacturing. There is U.S. congressional agreement, in principle, to bring back manufacturing to the United States. However, given how the global trade and manufacturing space has shifted in the last four decades, it may not be a comparative advantage to manufacture low margin and labor-intensive products. Officials in the current U.S. Administration have stated that manufacturing of socks and T-shirts is not necessarily in the interest of the United States, but focusing on value-added products is essential. While silicon chips, solar panels, and batteries are key items of interest, advanced textile materials such as those that find applications in industrial products and composites, products that can save human lives, and products for protecting the environment are highly-valued items that cater to national security.

The effect of Stachys floridana Shuttlew.ex Benth extract as an additive on the chemical properties of chitosan biodegradable film, TAPPI Journal June 2025

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to explore chitosan with Stachys floridana Shuttlew. ex Benth (SFSB) extract as an additive to prepare an active film. The effects of the SFSB extract on the physical, antioxidant, and bacteriostatic properties of chitosan biodegradable films were studied. The results showed that the addition of SFSB extract significantly improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film, and its biodegradation rate increased rapidly. Compared to the control film, the water solubility was lower at 19.40%, the expansion degree was higher at 288.90%, the water vapor permeability (WVP) was 0.364 g·mm/(m²·d·kPa), the surface hydrophobicity increased, and the mechanical strength was also improved. The contact angle increased to 89.3°. In addition, as the amount of SFSB increased, the thermal stability of chitosan-Stachys floridana Shuttlew. ex Benth (CS-SFSB) films also increased significantly, and their ultraviolet (UV) blocking ability was gradually enhanced. The results indicate that CS-SFSB has potential as a food packaging material.

ABSTRACT: The pulp, paper, and textile sectors have contrib-uted to lifestyle improvements for people with the development and commercialization of products like toilet tissue, facial wipes, diapers, and feminine hygiene products, to name a few. Research and development (R&D) efforts in these sectors are critical now more than ever due to the need for healthcare and lifesaving products, as became evident with the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the need to meet net-zero carbon goals and the necessity to revive manufacturing in devel-oped economies clearly emphasize the requirement to ex-amine the R&D landscape. Academia, industry, and governments have respective roles to play in this field.
