Kraft recovery boiler operation with splash plate and/or beer can nozzles — a case study, TAPPI Journal Octobr 2021

ABSTRACT: In this work, we study a boiler experiencing upper furnace plugging and availability issues. To improve the situation and increase boiler availability, the liquor spray system was tuned/modified by testing different combinations of splash plate and beer can nozzles. While beer cans are typically used in smaller furnaces, in this work, we considered a furnace with a large floor area for the study. The tested cases included: 1) all splash plate nozzles (original operation), 2) all beer can nozzles, and 3) splash plate nozzles on front and back wall and beer cans nozzles on side walls. We found that operating according to Case 3 resulted in improved overall boiler operation as compared to the original condition of using splash plates only. Additionally, we carried out computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of the three liquor spray cases to better understand the furnace behavior in detail for the tested cases. Model predictions show details of furnace combus-tion characteristics such as temperature, turbulence, gas flow pattern, carryover, and char bed behavior. Simulation using only the beer can nozzles resulted in a clear reduction of carryover. However, at the same time, the predicted lower furnace temperatures close to the char bed were in some locations very low, indicating unstable bed burning. Compared to the first two cases, the model predictions using a mixed setup of splash plate and beer can nozzles showed lower carryover, but without the excessive lowering of gas temperatures close to the char bed.

Corrosion damage and in-service inspection of retractable sootblower lances in recovery boilers, TAPPI Journal October 2021

ABSTRACT: Several reports of accidents involving serious mechanical failures of sootblower lances in chemical recovery boilers are known in the pulp and paper industry. These accidents mainly consisted of detachment and ejection of the lance tip, or even of the entire lance, to the inside of the furnace, towards the opposite wall. At least one of these cases known to the author resulted in a smelt-water explosion in the boiler. In other events, appreciable damage or near-miss conditions have already been experienced. The risk of catastrophic consequences of the eventual detachment of the lance tip or the complete lance of a recovery boiler soot-blower has caught the attention of manufacturers, who have adjusted their quality procedures, but this risk also needs to be carefully considered by the technical staff at pulp mills and in industry committees. This paper briefly describes the failure mechanisms that prevailed in past accidents, while recommending inspection and quality control policies to be applied in order to prevent further occurrences of these dangerous and costly component failures. Digital radiography, in conjunction with other well known inspection techniques, appears to be an effective means to ensure the integrity of sootblower lances in chemical recovery boilers used in the pulp and paper industry.

Displacement washing of softwood pulp cooked to various levels of residual lignin content, TAPPI Journal September 2021

ABSTRACT: This study investigates the influence of the degree of delignification of kraft spruce pulp cooked at seven different kappa numbers, ranging from 18.1 to 50.1, on the efficiency of displacement washing under laboratory conditions. Although the pulp bed is a polydispersive and heterogeneous system, the correlation dependence of the wash yield and bed efficiency on the Péclet number and the kappa number of the pulp showed that washing efficiency increased not only with an increasing Péclet number, but also with an increasing kappa number. The linear dependence between the mean residence time of the solute lignin in the bed and the space time, which reflects the residence time of the wash liquid in the pulp bed, was found for all levels of the kappa number. Washing also reduced the kappa number and the residual lignin content in the pulp fibers.

Editorial: Critical literature reviews in open source journals, TAPPI Journal June 2023

ABSTRACT: We stand on the shoulders of giants” is a famous metaphor used by Sir Isaac Newton. This testifies to the fact that new information or discoveries are built on understanding and analyzing earlier information. Particularly in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, it is important to have thorough analysis of earlier research activities in a particular field to propose a new direction of research, to evolve new ideas, and to develop new test methods and standards. It is a mandatory and required aspect of every original research paper to have a Literature Review section in the introductory part of the paper.

Pareto-based design of experiments for identifying and comparing optimum sealing parameters of heat sealing applications in packaging machines, TAPPI Journal June 2023

ABSTRACT: Sealing is one of the most important process steps in industrial packaging, because the sealed seam is the most sensitive section of a package in terms of quality. For this reason, a major focus in flexible packaging is the sealing process, and among this, heat sealing is the most frequently used technology. In detail, applications of heat sealing processes are confronted with four conflicting objectives: increasing seam quality, reducing dwell time, reducing sealing temperature, and increasing process robustness towards varying conditions. Typical problems, such as identification of the optimum process parameters or selection of the most appropriate packaging film, are subject to these conflicting objectives. This paper presents a recently published design of experiments for characterizing and comparing heat sealing properties of packaging films based on a multi-objective optimization algorithm. The approach provides easy-to-read charts showing all optimum sealing parameters with regard to the four essential objectives of heat sealing: seam quality, dwell time, sealing temperature, and process robustness. Three case studies show exemplary applications of the new approach: 1) analyzing transport damages of beverage powder packages; 2) identifying and comparing optimum sealing parameter of a standard, mono-material, and fiber based packaging film regarding tightness and visual properties of the produced sachets; and 3) analyzing the effect of additional aluminum layers on sealing characteristics regarding hot-tack.The new design of experiments may provide the basis of a standard test method for the identification of optimal sealing parameters in the heat sealing processes.

Co-pulping of Trewia nudiflora and Trema orientalis, TAPPI Journal June 2023

ABSTRACT: Trewia nudiflora, a fast-growing species, was evaluated as a pulpwood. The a-cellulose content of this species was 40.4% with a Klason lignin of 21.5%. It was characterized by shorter fibers with a thin cell wall. The pulp yield was 40% with a kappa number of 16 at the conditions of 18% active alkali charge and 30% sulfidity for 2 h cooking at 170°C. T. nudiflora was similar to Trema orientalis in anatomical, morphological, and chemical composition; therefore, mixed chips at a 50:50 mixture ratio were cooked under optimum conditions. The pulp yield of mixed chip cooking was 45.4% with a kappa number of 19.4. The tensile and tear index of T. nudiflora pulps were 64.8 Nœm/g and 11.5 kPaœm2/g at 35 °SR, respectively. The mixed chips, T. nudiflora, and T. orientalis pulps showed above 81% brightness when bleached by D0(EP)D1 sequence using 20 kg chlorine dioxide (ClO2)/ton of pulp.

Recovery boiler back-end heat recovery, TAPPI Journal March 2023

ABSTRACT: Sustainability and efficient use of resources are becoming increasingly important aspects in the operation of all industries. Recently, some biomass-fired boilers have been equipped with increasingly complex condensing back-end heat recovery solutions, sometimes also using heat pumps to upgrade the low-grade heat. In kraft recovery boilers, however, scrubbers are still mainly for gas cleaning, with only simple heat recovery solutions. In this paper, we use process simulation software to study the potential to improve the power generation and energy efficiency by applying condensing back-end heat recovery on a recovery boiler. Different configurations are considered, including heat pumps. Potential streams to serve as heat sinks are considered and evaluated. Lowering the recovery boiler flue gas temperature to approximately 65°C significantly decreases the flue gas losses. The heat can be recovered as hot water, which is used to partially replace low-pressure (LP) steam, making more steam available for the condensing steam turbine portion for increased power generation. The results indicate that in a simple condensing plant, some 1%•4% additional electricity could be generated. In a Nordic mill that provides district heating, even more additional electricity generation, up to 6%, could be achieved. Provided the availability of sufficient low-temperature heat sinks to use the recovered heat, as well as sufficient condensing turbine swallowing capacity to utilize the LP steam, the use of scrubbing and possibly upgrading the heat using heat pumps appears potentially useful.

Non-process elements in the recovery cycle of six Finnish kraft pulp mills, TAPPI Journal March 2023

ABSTRACT: In this work, the aim was to study the distribution and accumulation of the non-process elements (NPEs) in the recovery cycle of Finnish pulp mills and look at whether the geographical location (North vs. South) correlates with the current Finnish NPE levels. In addition, a comparison to older similar Finnish measurements was made with an attempt to analyze the reasons behind differences in the most typical non-process elements, aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), chlorine (Cl), and potassium (K), taking into account the main elements in the white liquor, sodium (Na) and sulfur (S). The extensive laboratory results gained in this study are from seven sampling points at six pulp mills and present analytical data of metal concentrations. The data obtained presents an update to previous NPE studies. The levels found did not statistically differ between North and South Finland. The NPE levels, apart from phosphorus, found in Finnish pulp mills today have not changed considerably compared to the levels in earlier investigations in the 1990s. In the newest data, the phosphorus concentration was consistently higher in the as fired black liquor, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) ash, lime mud, and green liquor than in the previous results. In addition, the levels of Al, Si, Ca, P, and Mg in recovery boiler ESP ash were consistently higher compared to the older results. As the mills start to close their systems more, a stronger accumulation of NPEs can be expected, increasing the likelihood of more operational problems in the process. Further understanding of where the NPEs accumulate and how they can be most effectively removed will be valuable knowledge in the future.
