Water-based adhesive penetration into paperboard and coated paperboard, TAPPI Journal January 2025
The setting of water-based adhesives in contact with paperboard is important in the production of boxes and other packaging, but the topic has received little attention in the literature. The penetration of the adhesive into the paper surface is important to get good bond strength through mechanical interlocking. The influence of the process conditions and the paper properties on this penetration is lacking. A water-based adhesive was applied to an uncoated and coated paperboard. The coating layer had two latex levels. Samples were characterized in terms of air permeability, void fraction, average pore size, and coat weight. The adhesive was applied to the samples in a mechanical press, squeezing a drop between two samples. The penetration of the adhesive was characterized with a silicone oil absorption method that measured the decrease in pore volume after the adhesive had been applied to approximate the pore volume taken up by the adhesive. The bond strength was measured with a peeling test. The penetration depth into uncoated paper did not depend on the application method parameters such as pressing time, pressure, or initial solids of the adhesive. The penetration depth ranged from 35•40 mm. The penetration into 10 pph latex content coated paper was similar to the uncoated samples, but reduced penetration was observed into the 40 pph latex content coatings. The results were compared to the limiting amount of adhesive that was obtained from the weight gain of the samples and to a simple model that is based on flow in porous media. Peel tests revealed that good penetration was needed, as well as a strong coating layer to obtain high peel forces.

Reducing aox by increasing oxidation potential in the first caustic extraction stage, TAPPI Journal December 2024

Hsieh | Tappi J. 74(11): 117(1991) - ABSTRACT: An increase in the standard oxidation potential of the reinforcing agent in the first caustic extraction stage will reduce the amount of AOX in the stage's effluent. A chlorinated broumstock pulp was treated alternatively in a basic caustic extraction (E) stage, an oxygen-reinforced caustic extraction (EO) stage, and an extraction stage reinforced with oxygen and peroxide (EOP). An AOX reduction of up to 30% was obtained in the effluent from the peroxide-reinforced extraction stage. In addition to the brownstock work, using two different model lignin compounds, we ran tests using oxyen, potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide with oxygen, and ozone with oxygen-reinforced caustic stages. In all cases, increasing the oxidation potential of the reinforcing agent decreased the amount of AOX detected in the effluent.

Production of high yield bleached hardwood kraft pulp: Breaking the kraft pulp yield barrier,TAPPI Journal December 2024

The process produces fully bleached, high brightness hardwood kraft pulp with a yield of greater than 53% on wood. Details of the development and processing steps, along with various recovery cycle impacts, are discussed.

Hydrogen peroxide and caustic soda: Dancing with a dragon while bleaching,TAPPI Journal December 2024

Hart, Carl Houtman, and Kilby Hirth | TAPPI J. 12(7): 59(2013) - ABSTRACT: When hydrogen peroxide is mixed with caustic soda, an auto-accelerating reaction can lead to generation of significant amounts of heat and oxygen. On the basis of experiments using typical pulp mill process concentration and temperatures, a relatively simple kinetic model has been developed. Evaluation of these model results reveals that hydrogen peroxide-caustic soda systems are extremely sensitive to hydrogen peroxide:caustic soda ratio, transition metal contamination, and temperature. Small changes in initial conditions can result in a closed system becoming explosive. Analysis of model results was used to develop guidelines for safer application of hydrogen peroxide in a mill setting.

Orifice geometry as a tool for evaluating extensional flow resistance of barrier coating colors, TAPPI Journal November 2024
ABSTRACT: Knowledge of extensional flow behavior of coating colors can be beneficial for improving runnability and eliminating defects in various coating processes. The current work evaluates the use of an orifice geometry attached to a commercial capillary viscometer as a tool to obtain extensional flow properties of barrier coating dispersions. By measuring the pressure drop across the orifice as a function of flow velocity, the method presents the flow resistance as Euler number at industrially relevant high deformation rates. The results agree with the earlier results obtained with a capillary entrance pressure loss technique. The type of polymer additive is shown to control the extensional flow resistance, with high molecular weight linear flexible polymers such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) having highest impact. The orifice method offers advantages over other approaches, including the need for only a small sample amount, ease of measurement, and access to high deformation rates.

Experimental investigations into fold cracking of double coated barrier dispersion coatings, TAPPI Journal November 2024
ABSTRACT: The trend for replacing single-use plastics with fiber-based barrier coated board packaging has prompted a significant amount of research. There are many proposed ways of providing suitable packaging for applications like food service. Among these are dispersion coated barriers on board, as well as laminated boards that can be produced using conventional polyethylene (PE) or new biodegradable plastics. Minerals have also been shown to be suitable additives to these coatings for improving barrier performance through surface chemistry and by increasing the tortuosity of the pathway through the barrier layer. They also improve the cost effectiveness of the layer by lowering the material cost and raising the solids content, and by improving hold out of the functional layers, leading to a reduction in the amount of barrier coating needed to meet a given performance requirement. Minerals can also aid in the barrier handling in terms of rheology and reduced “stickiness,” as well as blocking of the films. When incorporated as fillers into extruded films, improved adhesion of the film to the board has been reported. One of the remaining challenges is the potential for cracking at the fold during converting and the loss of barrier performance that this can lead to. In this work, we systematically looked at the impact of mineral type and level in a dispersion coating. We assessed the differences in performance resulting from different coating application methods for the precoat layer by looking at the cracking tendency and loss of barrier functionality after folding for both the precoat alone and the final double coated sheets. Barrier results include moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR), viscous vegetable oil, and the fluid blue stain in industrial methylated spirits (IMS) and Cobb water absorption, both before and after folding.

Continuous digester process safety improvements • Stress corrosion cracking and overpressure protection lessons learned and opportunities, TAPPI Journal October 2024
ABSTRACT: Georgia-Pacific has recent experience with continuous digester stress corrosion cracking (SCC) repairs where the extent of SCC was more than previous spot inspections had predicted (one digester had anodic protection, one did not). This paper offers case studies of reviewed and improved digester inspections by use of “boat” samples to quantify the depth of cracking mechanism. Boat sample test data is used to support repair recommendations based on hardness testing. Georgia-Pacific also reviewed overpressure protection systems and corrected gaps found in these systems. These included updating to the latest original equipment manufacturer (OEM) designs and formalizing functional testing procedures and practices. This review of digester inspection, testing, and repairs since 2020 provides: (1) a basis for including a 3rd party corrosion expert to be a part of inspections; (2) removes the use of power-wire brushes; (3) enhances digester inspection with 100% phased-array ultrasonic testing to detect SCC; and (4) ensures overpressure protection design and testing is aligned with corporate needs and the site-specific challenges.

Control of continuous digester kappa number using generalized model predictive control, TAPPI Journal September 2024
ABSTRACT: Kappa number variability at the digester impacts pulp yield, physical strength properties, and lignin content for downstream delignification processing. Regulation of the digester kappa number is therefore of great importance to the pulp and paper industry. In this work, an industrial application of model-based predictive control (MPC), based on generalized prediction control, was developed for kappa number feedback control and applied to a dual vessel continuous digester located in Western Canada. The problem was complicated by the need to apply heat at multiple locations in the cook. In this study, the problem was reduced from a multiple to a single input system by identifying three potential single variable permutations for temperature adjustment. In the end, a coordinated approach to the heaters was adopted. The process was perturbed and modeled as a simple first order plus dead time model and implemented in generalized predictive control (GPC). The GPC was then configured to be equivalent to Dahlin’s controller, which reduced tuning parameterization to a single closed loop time constant. The controller was then tuned based on robustness towards a worst-case dead time mismatch of 50%. The control held the mean value of the kappa number close to the setpoint, and a 40% reduction in the kappa number’s standard deviation was achieved. Different kappa number trials were run, and the average fiberline yield for each period was evaluated. Trial results suggested yield gains of 0.3%•0.5% were possible for each 1 kappa number target increase.

Effects of hydrodynamic shear during formation of paper sheets with the addition of nanofibrillated cellulose, cationic starch, and cationic retention aid, TAPPI Journal September 2024
ABSTRACT: Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate effects of hydrodynamic shear levels on papermaking process variables and paper handsheet properties. The furnish was from 100% recycled copy paper, to which was added nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) at the 5% level following its optional pretreatment with cationic starch. A cationic copolymer of acrylamide (cPAM) was used as the retention aid. Different levels of hydrodynamic shear were applied both after mixing the NFC with the cationic starch (pre-shearing) or after all the furnish components had been combined (final shearing). The presence or absence of pre-shearing was found to have little effect on the measured outcomes. By contrast, increasing final shear hurt filler retention and made the resulting paper more uniform. However, the final shear level did not have a significant effect on the tensile strength of the resulting handsheets. Medium-charge density cationic starch, used in pretreating the NFC, consistently gave greater strength in comparison to a high-charge cationic starch. The significance of these findings is that though the relatively high hydrodynamic shear levels associated with modern paper machines can have some beneficial effects, they do not necessarily overcome all challenges associated with wet-end addition of nanocellulose in combination with other additives.
