Wet pressing and product quality: Review of previous pilot machine trials, TAPPI Journal July 2020
ABSTRACT: The purpose of wet pressing is to remove water by mechanical means to consolidate the web and minimize the energy expended in the dryer section. In this process, paper is compacted and densified to degrees that impact end-use performance. Average density is increased by pressing, which has implications for grades where stiffness is important. The z-direction density gradients can affect printing and converting. Lastly, pressing affects surface quality of paper and its response to printing. Broadly speaking, the final press nip dominates the paper surface roughness and the early press nips affect printing performance.

The winding mechanics of laminate webs, TAPPI Journal February 2020
ABSTRACT: Models that describe the residual stresses due to winding single-layer webs at the end of roll-to-roll manufacturing machines are mature. These models have been used to reduce or avoid defects that are due to winding. Many laminated products exist where two or more webs have been joined to form a thicker composite web. The properties of the web layers provide a unique functionality to the product being manufactured. No laminate winding models exist in the literature. This paper will focus on the development of a laminate winding model and laboratory test verification of the model.

Editorial: Concentrated content: TAPPI Journal special issues create research visibility, TAPPI Journal September 2024
You may have noticed that TAPPI Journal often brings readers special focused issues from time to time. Over the years, these issues have covered a range of topics, including wet-end technology, recovery cycle, foam forming, coating, additives, biorefinery, nanotechnology, lignin, pulping, recycling, university research, and more.

Editorial: The road to sustainable packaging: New research on aqueous barrier coating, TAPPI Journal November 2022
Authors: Joel C. Panek and Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: This TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue looks at hot topic research being done in coatings for paper and paperboard. We can feel the “earth shifting” in paper and paper-board packaging due to the strong call by consumers and brand owners for more sustainable and environmentally friendly options. This is the first TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue to highlight efforts within the paper coating community to produce more sustainable packaging.

Editorial: Fundamental understanding enables new coating opportunities, TAPPI Journal January 2025
TAPPI's Coating, Printing, and Surface Enhancement (CPSE) Division pursues open exchange of technical information related to materials, equipment, and processes for the manufacture, quality control, and use of coated papers, paperboard, and other substrates. Much of this technical information is presented at sponsored conferences, including TAPPICon and the Advanced Coating Symposium. Based on feedback from these events, TAPPI Journal peer reviews the research from these events that adds significant value to the scientific community. In last year's November issue, we presented five peer-reviewed manuscripts based on presentations given at TAPPICon 2024.

Editorial: Advancing the Digital Twin paradigm — From network mechanics to functional paper physics, TAPPI Journal March 2026
This Special Paper Physics Issue of TAPPI Journal serves as a critical bridge between the phenomenological observations shared at the last International Paper Physics Conference in Wuppertal, Germany, and the rigorous quantification required to realize the “Digital Twin” paradigm. This paradigm involves the creation of a virtual dynamic representation of a process that acts as a real-time counterpart of the actual one. We are particularly indebted to Jaan-Willem Simon of the University of Wuppertal, whose leadership was pivotal in translating the conference’s academic rigor into this scholarly collection.

Editorial: Agility and adaptation in a dynamic business world, TAPPI Journal January 2021
ABSTRACT: As we move into 2020, it's interesting to look back at the research topics that were covered in TAPPI Journal (TJ) the previous year. Members of the TJ editorial board organized diverse special issues on lignin, coating ,forming, and diverse papermaking and biorefinery topics, which are discussed in the following sections.

Considerations in managing wastewater odor at pulp and paper operations, TAPPI Journal March 2022
ABSTRACT: Many pulp and paper mills are, at least periodically, faced with the release of odors that can migrate offsite and be considered a nuisance by nearby residents. At chemical pulp mills, perceptible odors associated with reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) are common, many of which are highly perceptible owing to their low odor thresholds. As releases of RSCs and other odorous substances from production processes are progressively controlled, the proportional contribution from wastewater treatment systems to areal odors can increase. This review paper summarizes important fundamentals of odor generation, source identification, and control. Common odorous substances are identified, and mechanisms for their generation are summarized. Approaches for measuring odorous substances are detailed to enable more effective management, and various odor control strategies are discussed.

Editorial: Special coating issue contains highlighted works from TAPPICon 2023, TAPPI Journal November 2023
ABSTRACT: Did you know that TAPPI’s Coating and Graphic Arts Division has changed its name to Coating, Printing, and Surface Enhancement (CPSE) Division? This change occurred mid-year, as our members realized that the new name fits much better with the day-to-day workings of the Division, as well as the broader activities to functionalize and add value to paper and paperboard that continue to expand into new arenas.

Determining operating variables that impact internal fiber bonding using Wedge statistical analysis methods, TAPPI Journal November 2021
ABSTRACT: In this study, Wedge statistical analysis tools were used to collect, collate, clean up, plot, and analyze several years of operational data from a commercial paper machine. The z-direction tensile (ZDT) and Scott Bond tests were chosen as representative of fiber bond strength. After analyzing thousands of operational parameters, the ones with the most significant impact upon ZDT involved starch application method, starch penetration, and the amount of starch applied. Scott bond was found to be significantly impacted by formation and refining. Final calendering of the paper web has also shown an impact on internal fiber bonding.
