Quantification of hardwood black liquor contamination in pine black liquor, TAPPI Journal February 2024

ABSTRACT: The presence of hardwood black liquor contamination in pine black liquor can negatively impact brownstock washer and evaporator operation, as well as reduce soap separation and yield. It is also believed to negatively impact commercial kraft lignin production. It was desired to develop a method of quantitatively determining the amount of low-level hardwood liquor contamination in pine black liquor. A method employing pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (py-GCMS) was developed to perform the desired measurement. Laboratory cooks with carefully controlled blends of pine and hardwood chips were prepared, and the resulting liquor was measured using this technique. Additionally, samples of pine and hardwood black liquors were blended in known quantities and analyzed. All these samples were submitted as blind samples. The resulting analysis suggests the py-GCMS method was able to accurately determine the level of hardwood contamination between 1% to 10% hardwood liquor using a low-level calibration curve prepared with coniferyl alcohol and sinapyl alcohol as standards.

Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) sized paper reversion due to oxidative photodegradation, TAPPI Journal January 2024

ABSTRACT: Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) is a sizing agent used in papermaking to increase the resistance of paper-board towards water penetration. The acquired hydrophobic property of the paper can be reversed due to the instability of the sizing agent. It is broadly known that AKD size reversion is due to migration, poor orientation, masking, or hydrolysis of the sizing agent. Unfortunately, the environmental parameters that cause this chemical instability are not well understood. Thus, the conditions that initiate or catalyze AKD size reversion and the mechanisms of AKD size reversion under different environmental conditions need to be investigated. In this study, six different experimental setups were used to investigate how temperature, daylight, fluorescent light, oxygen, and ultraviolet (UV) light affect AKD size reversion. Cobb values and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (py-GCMS) results show that AKD size reversion is due to the degradation of the chemical in the presence of light and oxygen; temperature variations were found to accelerate reversion in the presence of light and oxygen. The oxidative photodegradation mechanism of the sizing agent is explored, and a possible mechanism is proposed.

Improvements in oil and grease resistance (OGR) test methodology for waterborne barrier coatings, TAPPI Journal November 2022

ABSTRACT: Paper-based food packaging is becoming more popular due to consumer demands for sustainable packaging options. Waterborne paper coatings that provide performance properties (i.e., resistance to oil and grease) not inherent to paper and board substrates offer improved sustainability profiles over earlier paper treatment options, including fluorocarbon treatment and coating with extruded plastics. The continued development of new paper coating technologies requires re-evaluation of current test methods and development of new methods to ensure lab evaluations can serve as accurate predictors of real-world performance. This paper provides an overview of commonly used oil and grease resistance (OGR) test methods within the paper coatings industry, and then describes improvements and developments made to two key methods: the 3M Kit test and an internally developed oil breakthrough test. The combined use of these adapted methods provides a more efficient testing workflow and a more complete understanding of the OGR performance of barrier coatings.

A method to produce paperboard with a lightweight low-density coating, TAPPI Journal November 2025

ABSTRACT: In this work, a method is described in which a coating layer is produced that consists of a network of bubble-shaped air-filled voids within the coating. This is accomplished by instantaneously flash-drying all the water in the coating as it exits the application nip. The nip is formed between a polished chrome drum and a deformable press roll. The combination of the drum temperature, nip pressure, and nip width allow for sufficient energy to be transferred to the coating to completely flash-dry the coating material. The pressure within the nip is sufficient to allow the coating to superheat within the nip, then flash boil as it exits the nip. This boiling effect and resulting expansion are constrained by the roll surface, resulting in a coated surface that mirrors the polished chrome surface. The coating immobilizes while in the process of boiling, which preserves the bubble structure. With a coat weight of 5 g/m2, a flat, smooth surface is produced. This process was scaled up to a mill production machine layout and run at speeds as high as 450 m/min.

Review of coating cracking and barrier integrity on paperboard substrates, TAPPI JournalDecember 2024

Authors: Joel C. Panek and Peter W. Hart | TAPPI J. 21(11): 589(2022) - ABSTRACT: Barrier packaging formats are major growth areas for the pulp and paper industry. It is technically challenging to maintain barrier properties during converting and end-use applications. Improved manufacturing capabilities and coating formulation knowledge will help maintain barrier integrity and enable growth of barrier products in challenging applications. These improvements will accelerate product development and commercialization, and allow faster response to product performance issues such as cracking. The literature on coating cracking provides knowledge mostly on the effects of coating formulations and to a lesser extent on substrate effects. Despite a large number of publications dedicated to coating failures, the approach to improve coating cracking remains empirical, and the transferability between studies and to real life applications has not been well established. Model development that successfully predicts commercial performance is in its infancy. However, some of these simplified models do a fairly good job predicting experimental data. The current work reviews the state of understanding as regards coating and barrier cracking and highlights the need for more research on cracking and barrier integrity.

Multiple recycling of paperboard: Paperboard characteristics and maximum number of recycling cycles— Part I: Multiple recycling of corrugated base paper, TAPPI Journal November 2019

ABSTRACT: Paper for recycling is an important fiber source for the production of corrugated base paper. The change in production capacity toward more and more packaging papers affects the composition of paper for recy-cling and influences the paper quality. This research project investigated the influence of the multiple recycling of five different corrugated base papers (kraftliner, neutral sulfite semichemical [NSSC] fluting, corrugating medium, testliner 2, and testliner 3) on suspen-sion and strength properties under laboratory conditions. The corrugated board base papers were repulped in a low consistency pulper and processed into Rapid-Köthen laboratory sheets. The sheets were then recycled up to 15 times in the same process. In each cycle, the suspension and the paper properties were recorded. In particular, the focus was on corrugated board-specific parameters, such as short-span compression test, ring crush test, corrugat-ing medium test, and burst. The study results indicate how multiple recycling under laboratory conditions affects fiber and paper properties.

Convolutional neural networks enhance pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry identification of coated papers, TAPPI Journal August 2024

ABSTRACT: In the evolving paper industry, accurate identification of coated paper components is essential for sustainability and recycling efforts. This study employed pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GCMS) to examine six types of coated paper. A key finding was the minimal interference of the paper substrate with the pyrolysis products of the coatings, ensuring reliable analysis. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) was employed to process the extracted ion chromatograms directly, simplifying the workflow and achieving a predictive accuracy of 95.2% in identifying different coating compositions. Additionally, the study high-lighted the importance of selecting an optimal pyrolysis temperature for effective feature extraction in machine learning models. Specific markers for coated papers, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene succinate (PBS), polylactic acid (PLA), and waterborne polyacrylates (WP), were identified. This research demonstrates a novel approach to coated paper identification by combining Py-GCMS with machine learning, offering a foundation for further studies in product quality and environmental impact.
