US Paper and Wood Products Manufacturers Report Sustainability Progress

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released its 2018 Sustainability Report, which highlights the US pulp, paper, packaging, tissue, and wood products manufacturing industry's contributions to sustainability across the value chain, including members' progress toward achieving the Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability goals. One of the report's main findings: Two of the six sustainability goals have been achieved ahead of the original 2020 deadline.

The forest products industry doesn't just play a role in American manufacturing—it gives a lead performance. According to the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), the forest products industry manufactures more than US$200 billion in products every year, and employs about 950,000 men and women, and forest products holds a spot among the "Top 10" manufacturing sector employers in 45 out of 50 states. In fact, the forest products industry accounts for approximately four percent of the total US manufacturing GDP. It also relies on a vital array of related manufacturers—of machinery, equipment, component parts, transport, and many other products—to keep its thousands of manufacturing sites humming.

MURRAY ELLIS One of the most rewarding and enjoyable parts of my career in the pulp and paper industry has been the opportunity to investigate and solve problems. The problem-solving process means that you are discovering, adapting and generating new information to address the problem at hand. In simple terms, you are acquiring knowledge in the pursuit of a solution. However, sometimes this problem-solving process does not find a solution easily.
