Optimization of energy efficiency and condensate production in evaporation plants for a modern softwood pulp mill, TAPPI Journal April 2026

ABSTRACT: To meet the need to further improve thermal efficiency and environmental performance of kraft pulp mills, new systems and techniques have been developed within the evaporation plant. This paper describes these novel approaches and how they were implemented in a project completed in 2018 for a new evaporator and condensate treatment system supplied by Valmet at the SCA Östrand market pulp mill in Sweden. This project was part of a stepwise upgrade of the complete mill to increase the production capacity of the mill from 430,000 to 900,000 air-dried metric tons/year (ADt/y). As part of this upgrade, the mill had the objectives to increase the energy efficiency of the pulp mill and to minimize the air emissions as much as possible, the effluent volume, and the water usage in the mill. The mill also wanted to have the disposal of the biosludge in the black liquor, and the production of tall oil from black liquor soap, liquid methanol, and turpentine. This required that the new evaporation and condensate treatment system be very closely integrated into the other process departments of the mill, including integration of the hot weak black liquor flash vapor from the digester directly into the evaporator train and the production of multiple streams of clean evaporation plant condensate at the correct temperature for the bleach plant. Heat and mass balance calculation values, which were found to do very well in predicting the effect on actual mill operation, are also presented in this paper.

A method to produce paperboard with a lightweight low-density coating, TAPPI Journal November 2025

ABSTRACT: In this work, a method is described in which a coating layer is produced that consists of a network of bubble-shaped air-filled voids within the coating. This is accomplished by instantaneously flash-drying all the water in the coating as it exits the application nip. The nip is formed between a polished chrome drum and a deformable press roll. The combination of the drum temperature, nip pressure, and nip width allow for sufficient energy to be transferred to the coating to completely flash-dry the coating material. The pressure within the nip is sufficient to allow the coating to superheat within the nip, then flash boil as it exits the nip. This boiling effect and resulting expansion are constrained by the roll surface, resulting in a coated surface that mirrors the polished chrome surface. The coating immobilizes while in the process of boiling, which preserves the bubble structure. With a coat weight of 5 g/m2, a flat, smooth surface is produced. This process was scaled up to a mill production machine layout and run at speeds as high as 450 m/min.

Since the days of Francis Bacon when the illustrious triumvirate of gunpowder, the compass, and paper were the drivers of civilizations, our community has enjoyed a noble place at the table. Indeed, especially over the last 100 years, pulp and paper has quietly powered communication, commerce, and, more than ever today, packaging, thus representing a steady backbone for the continued stability of many global industries.

Image analytical monitoring of paper quality - a feasibility

ABSTRACT: We evaluated 14 selected paper quality parameters using new image analytical techniques for characterization and monitoring of paper quality (multivariate AMT regression). We tested the technique on six major paper types. Of the parameters tested, 13 could be modeled with only minor optimization of the initial experimental image recording parameters. Although this analysis was performed in the laboratory with static sheets of paper, this new “remote sensing” image technique shows promising application potential for online product monitoring of the specified physical qualities.

Recent advances in the commercialization of NIR (near-infrar

ABSTRACT: Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy techniques have held the promise of a new generation of online and lab based process analyzers for the pulping and recovery areas for some years now. NIR technology has been shown to be a quite effective method for the analysis of white, green and black liquors by multiple investigators. NIR reflectance techniques have been shown to be effective in predicting yield and kappa number in pulp samples. Recently, commercial analyzers have been developed for green liquor analysis on the dissolving tank, white and green liquor analysis in the recaust area and black liquor analysis on batch and continuous digesters. These analyzers are currently running at different mill sites and are proving to be superior to current technology choices for these applications. A commercial online and lab based yield and kappa number analyzer are currently being developed based on NIR reflectance techniques. Results will be presented on the performance of these analyzers relating to accuracy, maintenance and total installed cost. Other potential NIR applications in the pulping and recovery area will also be addressed.
