Continuous digester rapid thinning, TAPPI Journal June 2024
ABSTRACT: Carbon steel continuous digesters built after the early 1980s are fully stress relieved, so stress corrosion cracking has been less of a concern. However, these newer digesters were designed to run modified cooking processes that have turned out to be much more corrosive than those running with conventional cooking. This corrosion is mainly associated with softwood digesters and appears to be flow related. Average corrosion rates of 40 mil/year are possible on the exposed shell between the wash and extraction screens. The corrosion patterns are visually distinct from surfaces in the upper digester and below the wash screens. This paper goes into practical detail on where it occurs, the causes, visual identification, inspection planning and results evaluation, and finally, how to mitigate this damage, which consists of applying a corrosion resistant barrier. Some discussion on dealing with general corrosion throughout the digester is included.

Editorial: TAPPI Journal 2024 Best Research Paper focuses on realistic potential for using nonwood residues in sustainable packaging, TAPPI Journal April 2025
ABSTRACT: Each year, the TAPPI Journal Editorial Board honors outstanding content by nominating and voting for the Best Research Paper published the previous year based on scientific merit, innovation, creativity, and clarity. TAPPI and the TAPPI Journal Editorial Board would like to congratulate the authors of the 2024 TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper: Antonio Suarez, Ashok Ghosh, Fritz Paulsen, and Peter W. Hart of Smurfit Westrock (formerly WestRock). The winning paper, “Life cycle carbon analysis of packaging products containing nonwood residues: A case study on linerboard and corrugating medium,” was published in the March 2024 issue.

Editorial: Progress continues in recovery cycle optimization, TAPPI Journal March 2023
ABSTRACT: Travel came to a halt just before the 2020 International Chemical Recovery Conference (ICRC) was to take place in Brazil. The ICRC was to be co-hosted in 2021 with TAPPI PEERS, but PEERS was eventually cancelled for that year as travel for many had not resumed. In early 2022, The University of Toronto hosted an online meeting in order to bring together the community of researchers and industrial engineers for an ICRC event. At this event, 19 research papers were presented.

Guest Editorial: Research and development in the post COVID-19 era, TAPPI Journal June 2021
Science and technology occupy prominent roles in solving global problems. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of science regarding decision-making, saving lives, and safeguarding the environment. While information technology (IT) and IT-based tools have garnered much needed attention in the past few decades, other areas such as manufacturing engineering, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals are finding their right places in gaining public and political support and attention--thanks to COVID-19! Such public attention has highlighted vulnerabilities due to lack of investments in manufacturing and materials engineering, as well as the need for strategic investments in these areas.

Relating bending stiffness measurements across various free span lengths, TAPPI Journal August 2020
ABSTRACT: Bending stiffness should be an intrinsic property of a material, so it is puzzling that the TAPPI Standard Test Method T 836 “Bending stiffness, four point method” specifies span lengths when testing different types of corrugated fiberboard. These specified spans often limit the samples that can be measured with this method. To better understand the relationship between bending stiffness and span length, we performed measurements on a range of materials at different spans. The results provide a practical tool enabling comparison of bending stiffness measurements made at various span lengths. Additionally, this note discusses several areas that could serve as the foundation for more fundamental work exploring the bending behavior of corrugated board.

Historical perspectives of corrugated box testing for 2020, TAPPI Journal March 2020
ABSTRACT: In the age of e-commerce, corrugated packaging is experiencing a resurgence; at least, consumers are receiving more corrugated boxes today than ever before. The corrugated box has been the main package for transporting goods for over 100 years, and corrugated board and boxes have been the focus of scientific study for about as long. For the last 50 years, box compressive test strength value (BCT) has been the main focus of research and testing. That was not always the case. In addition, many of today’s boxes experience a different end-use life than their predecessors.

The winding mechanics of laminate webs, TAPPI Journal February 2020
ABSTRACT: Models that describe the residual stresses due to winding single-layer webs at the end of roll-to-roll manufacturing machines are mature. These models have been used to reduce or avoid defects that are due to winding. Many laminated products exist where two or more webs have been joined to form a thicker composite web. The properties of the web layers provide a unique functionality to the product being manufactured. No laminate winding models exist in the literature. This paper will focus on the development of a laminate winding model and laboratory test verification of the model.

Editorial: Foam forming: Technology of many opportunities, TAPPI JOURNAL August 2019
ABSTRACT: Over the past ten years, the forest sector has faced big changes due to the decreased demand of printing papers and the fast growth in packaging and tissue products. Weekly news on the marine waste problem and global warming have raised public awareness and stimulated increased interest in bio-based materials, chemicals, and fuels.
