Anthraquinone pulping of kudzu (pueraria lobata), TAPPI JOUR
Author: Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: Kudzu was pulped underpulping conditions for kraft, kraft-AQ, soda, and soda-AQ processes. Anthraquinone addition increlased the carbohydrate content of the brownstock pulp for all cooks. Anthraquinone addition lowered the broumrtock kappa number while reducing the chemical demand. Brownstock ~om selected pulping sequences was tested to determine tear strength, tensile strength, burst strength, and~eeness. The broumstock was also subjected to a CED bleaching sequence. For the bleached pulps, viscosity and average fiber length were determined.

Mill experience of calcium carbonate scale formation in green liquor pipelines, TAPPI Journal August 2020
ABSTRACT: Experience of hard calcite (CaCO3) scale formation in green liquor pipelines at four kraft pulp mills was systematically investigated to determine if there is any correlation between the severity of the scaling problem at each mill and the design and operating conditions of its causticizing plant. The results show that the high degree of supersaturation of calcium ions (Ca2+) in the liquor is the main contributing factor. Mills that operate at a lower green liquor total titratable alkali (TTA), higher causticity, and a larger liquor temperature drop are more likely to produce a green liquor that is supersaturated with Ca2+, and thus experience more severe scaling problems. In order to minimize CaCO3 scaling, the green liquor handling equipment should be operated as steady as possible to avoid conditions that allow Ca2+ to be supersaturated. The strategies include minimizing variations in liquor TTA, insulating the green liquor pipelines to reduce temperature gradients, and adding lime mud to weak wash to provide seeds for precipitation to occur on mud particles instead of on metal substrate.

Coatings for sustainable paper-based flexible packaging: Barrier properties and processability, TAPPI Journal November 2022
ABSTRACT: In this study, the use of waterborne barrier dispersions from trademarked BLUEWAVE Mechanical Dispersion Technology as thin coatings for paper-based flexible packaging was investigated. Prototypes were designed and examined for their performance in process, rheology, barrier, heat-seal/hot-tack, and coefficient of friction (CoF). Compositional details such as the type and amount of base resins and dispersants were found to significantly impact performances and were key to the development of new prototypes that deliver the performance profiles for implementation in paper-based flexible packaging applications.

The Influence of the Fine Structure of Cellulose on the Action of Cellulases, TAPPI Journal June 2022
ABSTRACT: In the hydrolysis of cellulose with enzymes of Aspergillus niger at 47°C., it shown that a great decrease in the rate occurred in the late stage of the reaction, usually with considerable cellulose still reamaining undissolved.
