Guest Editorial: Fifty years with TAPPI: A personal and professional perspective, TAPPI Journal June 2020

ABSTRACT: While reflecting on this being my 50th year in TAPPI, it dwaned on me that my father Murray must also have been a TAPPI member for a similar length of time and that he probably joined TAPPI for the same reasons--we both had just started our first jobs in the pulp and paper industry and wanted to learn ecerything we could about the underlying technology.

Alternative “green” lime kiln fuels: Part II—Woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification, and hydrogen, TAPPI Journal May 2020

ABSTRACT: This paper is the second of a two-part series on “green” lime kiln fuels. The first part of this work reviews the use of pulp mill and recovery byproducts as either full or partial replacement of oil or natural gas in the kiln. The second part reviews the use of various forms of woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification and hydrogen as potential carbon neutral or carbon-free lime kiln fuels. Several of these options require specialized burners to supply the fuel to the kiln and high-quality metallurgy to withstand the acidic conditions of the fuel.

Reducing aox by increasing oxidation potential in the first

ABSTRACT An increase in the standard oxidation potential of the reinforcing agent in the first caustic extraction stage will reduce the amount of AOX in the stage's effluent. A chlorinated broumstock pulp was treated alternatively in a basic caustic extraction (E) stage, an oxygen-reinforced caustic extraction (EO) stage, and an extraction stage reinforced with oxygen and peroxide (EOP). An AOX reduction of up to 30% was obtained in the effluent from the peroxide-reinforced extraction stage. In addition to the brownstock work, using two different model lignin compounds, we ran tests using oxyen, potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide with oxygen, and ozone with oxygen-reinforced caustic stages. In all cases, increasing the oxidation potential of the reinforcing agent decreased the amount of AOX detected in the effluent.

Guest Editorial: Research and development in the post COVID-19 era, TAPPI Journal June 2021

Science and technology occupy prominent roles in solving global problems. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of science regarding decision-making, saving lives, and safeguarding the environment. While information technology (IT) and IT-based tools have garnered much needed attention in the past few decades, other areas such as manufacturing engineering, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals are finding their right places in gaining public and political support and attention--thanks to COVID-19! Such public attention has highlighted vulnerabilities due to lack of investments in manufacturing and materials engineering, as well as the need for strategic investments in these areas.

Designing paper and board barrier constructions for food contact applications, TAPPI Journal November 2025

ABSTRACT: This study examines the effect of multiple factors on barrier performance for purpose-built paper and paperboard constructions produced on an industrial pilot coater machine. Impacts from precoat latex chemistry, application method (flooded nip with bevel blade, jet with bevel blade, and pre-metered film coater, laboratory rod drawdown) and precoating calendering were studied in relation to resulting porosity, roughness, and barrier (liquid water, moisture, and oil). Results reveal a complex interaction between controllable and uncontrollable factors, offering insight for designing advanced barrier coatings on cellulosic substrates.
