Edge crush testing methods and box compression modeling, TAPPI Journal August 2022
ABSTRACT: While multiple test procedures have been developed to assess the inherent compressive strength of corrugated materials (edge crush test, ECT), limited work has explored the appropriateness of each in the context of box compression modeling. This study incorporates a variety of real-world samples, highlighting the varying challenges different ECT methods face in measuring the intrinsic compressive resistance of combined corrugated board. We examine each of these methods as inputs for different types of models, as well as discuss the propagation of measurement variation through the modeling effort. By highlighting the cases in which a given ECT method no longer proves to be an optimal parameter in box compression strength modeling, we explore how we might better measure this material property.

Editorial: The road to sustainable packaging: New research on aqueous barrier coating, TAPPI Journal November 2022
Authors: Joel C. Panek and Peter W. Hart | ABSTRACT: This TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue looks at hot topic research being done in coatings for paper and paperboard. We can feel the “earth shifting” in paper and paper-board packaging due to the strong call by consumers and brand owners for more sustainable and environmentally friendly options. This is the first TAPPI Journal Special Coating Issue to highlight efforts within the paper coating community to produce more sustainable packaging.

Relating bending stiffness measurements across various free span lengths, TAPPI Journal August 2020
ABSTRACT: Bending stiffness should be an intrinsic property of a material, so it is puzzling that the TAPPI Standard Test Method T 836 “Bending stiffness, four point method” specifies span lengths when testing different types of corrugated fiberboard. These specified spans often limit the samples that can be measured with this method. To better understand the relationship between bending stiffness and span length, we performed measurements on a range of materials at different spans. The results provide a practical tool enabling comparison of bending stiffness measurements made at various span lengths. Additionally, this note discusses several areas that could serve as the foundation for more fundamental work exploring the bending behavior of corrugated board.

Toward environmental resilience in pulp and paper manufacturing: Water consumption and carbon dioxide emission reductions, TAPPI Journal September 2025
ABSTRACT: Pulp and paper manufacturing is a water- and energy-intensive industrial sector, necessitating improvement of its operational efficiency, as well as reduction of emissions to the maximum extent possible. This review focuses on the reduction of water consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that originate in the pulp and paper industry (PPI). First, process simulation and optimization techniques used for water consumption reduction are reviewed. Then, techno-economic analyses of solvent-based CO2 capture from PPI are discussed. Additionally, key actions are proposed for enhancing water consumption reduction and CO2 capture in PPI.

Editorial: Advancing barrier science and protective materials: The 2025 winners of TAPPI Journal Best Research Paper Award and Honghi Tran Prize, TAPPI Journal April 2026
At the end of each year, the TAPPI Journal Editorial Board Members nominate papers for consideration as recipient of the Best Research Paper and Honghi Tran Prize from that year, looking for outstanding contributions that push the science and engineering boundaries of fiber-based materials. For 2025, the Board nominated 10 papers and evaluated each nomination in terms of scientific merit, innovation, creativity, and clarity. After voting on the papers earlier this year, the Editorial Board chose two co-winning papers for this distinct honor.

Development of a packaging test method, TAPPI Journal February 2026
ABSTRACT: Innovation in packaging design will be facilitated by a simple test method to indicate whether a product is compatible with paper recycling. Three laboratories cooperated on the development of a method and used it on linerboard, coated paperboard, wet-strength paperboard, and white copy paper. This test method includes pulping and screening. The data presented here illustrate the factors affecting the results of a bench-scale test. Our observations show that a bench-scale test can give reproducible results for yield, < 5%. We also present an approach to contaminant assessment based on current published test methods. A specification with a lower limit on yield of 70% and a contaminant level of less than 5,000 particles/kg is proposed.

Editorial: Advancing the Digital Twin paradigm — From network mechanics to functional paper physics, TAPPI Journal March 2026
This Special Paper Physics Issue of TAPPI Journal serves as a critical bridge between the phenomenological observations shared at the last International Paper Physics Conference in Wuppertal, Germany, and the rigorous quantification required to realize the “Digital Twin” paradigm. This paradigm involves the creation of a virtual dynamic representation of a process that acts as a real-time counterpart of the actual one. We are particularly indebted to Jaan-Willem Simon of the University of Wuppertal, whose leadership was pivotal in translating the conference’s academic rigor into this scholarly collection.

Editorial: Nonwovens sector provides opportunities for professional and advanced textiles growth, TAPPI Journal February 2023
ABSTRACT: With inflation still lingering, global fiduciary regulatory agencies like the U.S. Federal Reserve are handling the issue by hiking base interest rates. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has exposed lagging investments for advanced and agile manufacturing in developed economies in the recent past. Because of this situation, governments have begun taking policy initiatives, such as boosting support for infrastructure in the United States, creating a National Mission on Technical Textiles in India, and many initiatives in the United Kingdom and European Union to boost clean energy, fight climate change, and encourage sustainable manufacturing.
