Nanocellulose in Japan: An industrial perspective, TAPPI Journal April 2019

ABSTRACT: With the maturing of Japan’s economy, domestic demand for paper and paperboard is more likely to level off in the long term. Japanese paper companies are accelerating overseas production, especially in the emerging Asian markets, while strengthening competitiveness of domestic mills and developing new products. In Japan, we have always focused on emerging technologies and driving innovation in the pulp and paper industry. As a business definition, innovation does not equal innovative technology. Innovative technology can become innovation only when it is commercialized and used in industry.

Large data set analysis to determine refiner plate total cost of ownership, TAPPI Journal June 2019

ABSTRACT: Efficient process data storage and its subsequent analysis are vital to the profitable operation of a paper mill. An evaluation of refiner plate performance was conducted for an integrated paper mill. Trials with two new plate patterns were compared with the incumbent pattern; the goal was to increase refiner plate life. Plate life increased with both new design patterns, and the mill selected one of the two new choices. However, addi-tional impacts to paper machine performance and mill maintenance costs were not considered in the selection deci-sion. A large data set analysis tool was used to identify unrealized savings of 1.5% with reduced fiber usage (basis weight) on the paper machine’s most prevalent grade. The large data analysis indicated that this unrealized benefit with the alternate plate design was not attainable with the chosen plate design.

Effects of metal surface morphology on deposition behavior of microstickies from papermaking white water, TAPPI Journal July 2023

ABSTRACT: Deposition of small adhesive particles, called microstickies, onto pulp processing equipment and paper machines causes quality and operational problems for recycling mills. The factors that control deposition of microstickies onto surfaces of metal parts remain unclear. In this work, aluminum surfaces with a range of surface roughness were exposed to slurries containing microstickies. The deposition results showed that flat surfaces promote the aggregation and deposition of microstickies particles. Uneven surfaces tended to favor deposition of smaller microstickies, 0.2•1 µm, which may be related to greater contact area presented by the rougher surface. This work provides insights into the deposition of microstickies.

Editorial: The innovation engine and the forest products industry value chain, TAPPI Journal October 2023

ABSTRACT: The forest products industry (FPI • pulp, paper, paperboard, building products, allied products, and byproducts) has been continuously innovating as it manufactures and delivers value-added products to consumers worldwide. Integrated pulp and paper mills produce pulp, paper, paperboard, and byproducts like turpentine, tall oil, methanol, lignin, and other chemicals.

Determining operating variables that impact internal fiber bonding using Wedge statistical analysis methods, TAPPI Journal November 2021

ABSTRACT: In this study, Wedge statistical analysis tools were used to collect, collate, clean up, plot, and analyze several years of operational data from a commercial paper machine. The z-direction tensile (ZDT) and Scott Bond tests were chosen as representative of fiber bond strength. After analyzing thousands of operational parameters, the ones with the most significant impact upon ZDT involved starch application method, starch penetration, and the amount of starch applied. Scott bond was found to be significantly impacted by formation and refining. Final calendering of the paper web has also shown an impact on internal fiber bonding.

Modeling of the energy of a smelt-water explosion in the recovery boiler dissolving tank, TAPPI Journal August 2020

ABSTRACT: The explosion energy generated as molten smelt droplets interact with water was evaluated as a function of smelt distribution, water temperature, and smelt temperature using a thermodynamic model. The results show that increasing smelt-to-water volume ratio and water temperature significantly increases the explosion energy, converting a larger proportion of the thermal energy of smelt into mechanical work. To reduce the chance of violent smelt-water explosions, it is important to: i) optimize the shatter jet design and operation to uniformly distribute the smelt over a large area in the dissolving tank; ii) avoid high green liquor temperature and ensure adequate liquor mixing; and iii) avoid upsets that may cause heavy smelt runoff or jellyroll smelt.
