Measurement of the dynamics of fluid sorption for tissue papers, TAPPI Journal July 2019
ABSTRACT: Liquid absorption ability belongs to the most important features of tissue papers. Due to non-homo-geneous internal and superficial structures, precise and fast evaluation of this property is challenging. The main aim of the presented research was to design an experimental device dedicated to the measurement of the kinetics of wetting phenomenon for tissue papers. The second aim was to evaluate whether it was possible to use image analysis for more precise characterization of liquid absorption properties of tissue paper. The obtained results showed that the method used, based on image analysis supported by gravimetric methods, proved to efficiently and quantitatively characterize the dynamics of liquid absorption for tissue papers. Supplementary parameters such as absorption anisotropy and in-plane velocity were obtained. Different experi-mental results were obtained for various tissue paper grades. Furthermore, water absorption capacity calculated from image analysis data correlated with results obtained according to the standard method EN ISO 12625-8:2010 “Tissue paper and tissue products—Part 8: Water-absorption time and water-absorption capacity, basket-immersion test method.” Hence, the presented device quantitatively characterizes and discriminates water absorption phenom-enon for tissue papers.

Citrus-based hydrocolloids: A water retention aid and rheology modifier for paper coatings, TAPPI Journal July 2019
ABSTRACT: The rheological and dewatering behavior of an aqueous pigmented coating system not only affects the machine runnability but also affects the product quality. The current study describes the use of natural hydrocol-loids derived from citrus peel fibers as a rheology modifier in paper coating applications. The results were compared with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in a typical paper coating system. Water retention of the coating formulation was increased by 56% with citrus peel fibers compared to a default coating, and it also was higher than a CMC-containing coating. The Brookfield viscosity of paper coatings was found to increase with citrus peel fibers. Compared to CMC, different citrus peel fibers containing coating recipes were able to achieve similar or higher water retention values, with no change or a slight increase in viscosity. Coatings were applied on linerboard using the Mayer rod-coating method, and all basic properties of paper were measured to assess the impact of citrus peel fiber on the functional value of the coatings. Paper properties were improved with coated paper containing citrus peel fibers, including brightness, porosity, smoothness, surface bonding strength, and ink absorption.

The evolution of reel statistical methods, TAPPI Journal June 2019
ABSTRACT: Multiple statistical methods for calculating the variance partition analysis (VPA) of reel data have existed for decades. In the paper industry, VPA is also commonly known as reel statistics. VPA commonly consists of total variance (TOT) that is then divided into three components: cross direction (CD), machine direction (MD), and residual (RES). A common mathematical procedure is referred to as ANOVA (analysis of variance). TAPPI Standard Test Method T 545 “Cross-machine grammage profile measurement (gravimetric method)” addresses paper testing and includes the ANOVA equations that have also been used to analyze scanning data.In the 1990s, TAPPI published TIP 1101-01 “Calculation and partitioning of variance using paper machine scanning sensor measurements,” which contained simple formulas that were easy to implement and could be used by a nov-ice to generate statistics on a spreadsheet. All involved quality control system (QCS) suppliers agreed to support this common method in their QCS. TIP 1101 was recently revised, and this paper concerns the analysis of data collected from a scanning sensor in a QCS and the creation of a common method for the calculation of reel statistics by TAPPI’s Process Control Division.

Size distribution analysis of microstickies treated by enzyme mixtures in papermaking whitewater, TAPPI Journal March 2019
ABSTRACT: Microstickies present a formidable challenge for papermakers. Many strategies have been explored o control them. Enzyme treatment is a promising technology, but the mechanism of its action has not been determined, thus inhibiting further application of this new technology. This study investigated characteristics and size distributions of microstickies treated by esterase-cellulase mixtures. Determination of particle size and number was accomplished using a modified flow cytometer, which combined streaming capillary flow, laser-based particle size analysis and fluorescent dye tracing. The results showed that treatment of samples with enzyme mixtures induced size reduction of the larger microstickies. This effect was most dramatic for 1:1 ratios of esterase to cellulase. The treated particles were more stable than untreated ones. The smaller microstickies treated with some ratios of esterase and cellulase tended to aggregate over time.

Multiple recycling of paperboard: Paperboard characteristics and maximum number of recycling cycles— Part I: Multiple recycling of corrugated base paper, TAPPI Journal November 2019
ABSTRACT: Paper for recycling is an important fiber source for the production of corrugated base paper. The change in production capacity toward more and more packaging papers affects the composition of paper for recy-cling and influences the paper quality. This research project investigated the influence of the multiple recycling of five different corrugated base papers (kraftliner, neutral sulfite semichemical [NSSC] fluting, corrugating medium, testliner 2, and testliner 3) on suspen-sion and strength properties under laboratory conditions. The corrugated board base papers were repulped in a low consistency pulper and processed into Rapid-Köthen laboratory sheets. The sheets were then recycled up to 15 times in the same process. In each cycle, the suspension and the paper properties were recorded. In particular, the focus was on corrugated board-specific parameters, such as short-span compression test, ring crush test, corrugat-ing medium test, and burst. The study results indicate how multiple recycling under laboratory conditions affects fiber and paper properties.

The solubility of calcium carbonate in green liquor handling systems, TAPPI Journal October 2019
ABSTRACT: The formation of hard calcite (CaCO3) scale in green liquor handling systems is a persistent problem in many kraft pulp mills. CaCO3 precipitates when its concentration in the green liquor exceeds its solubility. While the solubility of CaCO3 in water is well known, it is not so in the highly alkaline green liquor environment. A systematic study was conducted to determine the solubility of CaCO3 in green liquor as a function of temperature, total titratable alkali (TTA), causticity, and sulfidity. The results show that the solubility increases with increased temperature, increased TTA, decreased causticity, and decreased sulfidity. The new solubility data was incorporated into OLI (a thermodynamic simulation program for aqueous salt systems) to generate a series of CaCO3 solubility curves for various green liquor conditions. The results help explain how calcite scale forms in green liquor handling systems.

Microbial load and proliferation associated with various face mask types and sources during the COVID-19 pandemic, TAPPI Journal January 2022
ABSTRACT: Due to the shortage of personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, homemade face coverings were recommended as alternatives. However, the capability of alternative face coverings to proliferate microbes have not been fully documented. The current study evaluated bacterial load and proliferation associated with the use of common face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mask type-specific and surface-related bacterial load and pattern were noticeable in the study. Results indicated that roadside masks are among samples that contained relatively higher initial bacterial load. The highest number of bacterial forming colonies were observed in the inner surface of mask samples. Proliferation of microbes over time was also noticeable among the non-certified face coverings included in the study. Sterilization or washing of non-certified fabric face masks before use is recommended.

Effects of rings on flow and temperature in lime kilns, TAPPI Journal June 2022
ABSTRACT: A steady state, two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric model has been developed to help understand how rings form and grow in a typical lime kiln. Rings of varying length, thickness, and geometry at the front and back faces were modeled to study the effects on flue gas flow and temperature. The results show that ring growth causes the gas velocity to increase and insulates the adjacent refractory, resulting in a lower kiln shell temperature. The results also reveal the formation of recirculation zones immediately down-stream of the rings, as well as temperature deviations upstream and downstream of the rings that might promote recarbonation and further ring growth. The model was applied to a kiln from a kraft mill with front-end and mid-kiln rings and good agreement was obtained between the measured and predicted kiln shell temperatures, providing confidence in the modeling.

Improving refining efficiency with deflocculation, TAPPI Journal May 2022
ABSTRACT: The ability to load a refiner requires the formation of a fiber mat between opposing refiner bars. One of the consequences of this is the formation of flocs that persist through the refiner grooves and exit the refiner. These flocs interfere with sheet strength, requiring additional energy to make up the strength deficit. In addition, flocs can initiate string formation, resulting in machine efficiency issues such as cross-machine profile deterioration and the downtime required to correct it. Novel refiner plate modifications have been shown to improve refining efficiency in otherwise identical refiner plates. Energy savings are typically around 15% of gross refining energy on the basis of the treated stock, although much higher reductions have also been seen. Addressing this previously underappreciated flaw in conventional refining enables greenhouse gas reduction and other benefits related to sheet strength and machine efficiency.

Web instability in the open draw and the impact on paper machine efficiency, TAPPI Journal May 2022
ABSTRACT: Paper is most likely to break in the first open draw on a paper machine where it is unsupported, wettest, and weakest. Tension is applied to peel the web from the roll surface, as well as minimize web flutter in the open draw. The average tension is well below the breaking point and is often set by adjusting the speed difference between the press and the next machine element by visually observing the behavior of the web. However, machine direction variations caused by instabilities in the paper machine can cause tension swings that exceed the strength of the web. Measurement of the web’s release point from press rolls on pilot and commercial paper machines was used to identify the cause of tension instabilities. Variations in the speed of the paper machine drives and the work of adhesion from the press roll surface were identified as key factors. Fluctuations of paper moisture, which affects the elastic modulus and strength of the web, appear to be less important.
