As the packaging industry accelerates toward sustainability, collaboration among material innovators is key to delivering solutions that meet both performance and environmental goals of converters and brand owners. Through a partnership between Kuraray’s PLANTICTM, a leading developer in bio-based resins, and Mica Corporation, an expert in water-based primer technology, this work focuses on the development of recyclable, high-barrier, paper-based flexible packaging to replace traditional multilayer structures and support circularity.
This high-barrier, paper-based package is designed for food and consumer goods, where oxygen and moisture protection are critical. By integrating a thermoplastic starch with a water-based primer, converters can achieve strong interlayer bonding, enhanced barrier performance, and compatibility with existing paper recycling streams. This collaboration represents a significant step toward reducing plastic usage without compromising functionality, offering brand owners and converters a practical pathway to meet sustainability targets and regulatory requirements.
Keywords:
