Kerry Figiel
Kerry Figiel retired from International Paper after 44 years of service and is currently employed by OnCare Digital Assets. He is a Senior Engineering Fellow specializing in Process Control, Quality Control Systems (QCS) and Web Inspection Systems (WIS). He holds a bachelor’s degree from the US Military Academy, an MSBA from Boston University, an MS in Industrial Engineering from Louisiana Tech University and is a retired Professional Engineer. Kerry served for 7 years in the U.S. Army.
Kerry has been involved in TAPPI for over 30 years and was the Process Control Division’s 1st Chairman from 2007-2010. He also served as Division Awards Chairman, Technical Program Chairman and was the Conference Chairman for PaperCon 2013. He was a co-author, editor and Chairman of the Division’s QCS Handbooks, “Paper Machine Quality Control System Vol I, Measurement Systems and Product Variability” and “Paper Machine Quality Control System Vol 2, Control Systems and Applications” and has published over 10 papers. Kerry is a member of the 2015 Centennial class of TAPPI Fellows and was award TAPPI’s Herman Joachim Distinguish Service Award for leadership in 2019. He holds over 10 US Patents.
Seyhan Nuyan
Seyhan Nuyan retired from Valmet in 2022 after 43 years of service in Canada, Finland, and the USA in leadership positions from Applications R&D to Product, Business, Sales, and Executive Management. He holds a Ph.D. in Control Engineering and an M.S. in Advanced Electronics Design.
Seyhan’s primary industrial contributions are in quality measurements and control solutions for moving sheet processes. He has been granted several control system patents. A prolific author, Seyhan published numerous peer-reviewed articles and contributed to various books.
In 2005, at the end of his residency in Finland, Seyhan was honored with a presidential medal of honor, Knight, First Class of the Order of the Lion of Finland. In 2024, he received TAPPI’s Gunner Nicholson Gold Medal Award.
Seyhan was named a TAPPI Fellow in 2015. An active member of TAPPI since 1987, he was PaperCon 2018 Steering Committee Chair, won the 2008 Jasper Mardon Memorial Prize, the 2018 Process Control Division’s Leadership and Service Award, and the Division’s 2008 and 2018 Best Paper Awards. He is also a PAPTAC member and has contributed to its “Theory & Practice of Papermaking” courses annually over 15 years. Seyhan is a Life member of TAPPI, IEEE, and Sigma Xi, and currently serves on the Board of the Finnish American Chamber of Commerce Southeast.
