Measurements from online sensors often correlate with the corresponding offline measurements from laboratory instruments. Offline laboratory measurements of the same properties are usually the reference measurement. The correlation results adjust online measurements so that the adjusted online measurements match the offline measurements. Conventionally, this correlation analysis uses regression technique that treats the offline reference measurement as an independent variable (regressor).

This paper investigates a regression approach in which the online measurement is used as the regressor, similar to the method used to derive a soft-sensor measurement. The noticeably different results obtained using these approaches are explored and discussed.
