High-Barrier Packaging Without Plastic
What if high-barrier, recyclable packaging didn’t require plastic at all? As part of the Advanced Renewable Materials (ARM) segment at TAPPICon 2026 (April 26–29 in Columbus, Ohio), Chloe Parisi of LGP2 will present “From Atomic Layer Deposition to High Barrier Cellulose & Nanocellulose Materials: Scaling Nanotechnology for Sustainable Packaging.” During her presentation, Parisi explores how cutting-edge nanotechnology is transforming cellulose into a true high-performance packaging material. By applying Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD)—a technique widely used in the semiconductor industry—an ultra-thin coating can be covalently bonded to cellulose fibers, dramatically improving water resistance and gas barrier performance while maintaining recyclability.
Developed by Grenoble-based startup CILKOA, this innovative ALD process allows paper, cardboard, and molded fiber products to achieve significantly improved barrier performance—without relying on plastics. Because the materials remain more than 99% cellulose, they retain the recyclability and end-of-life benefits of traditional fiber while delivering enhanced functionality. Attendees will also gain insight into how various cellulose substrates respond to ALD treatment, helping advance scalable, fully recyclable solutions for sustainable packaging.
