Large data set analysis to determine refiner plate total cost of ownership, TAPPI Journal June 2019
ABSTRACT: Efficient process data storage and its subsequent analysis are vital to the profitable operation of a paper mill. An evaluation of refiner plate performance was conducted for an integrated paper mill. Trials with two new plate patterns were compared with the incumbent pattern; the goal was to increase refiner plate life. Plate life increased with both new design patterns, and the mill selected one of the two new choices. However, addi-tional impacts to paper machine performance and mill maintenance costs were not considered in the selection deci-sion. A large data set analysis tool was used to identify unrealized savings of 1.5% with reduced fiber usage (basis weight) on the paper machine’s most prevalent grade. The large data analysis indicated that this unrealized benefit with the alternate plate design was not attainable with the chosen plate design.

A study of the softness of household tissues using a tissue softness analyzer and hand-felt panels, TAPPI Journal March 2019
ABSTRACT: This study applied the reciprocal matrix approach to deduce the correlation between hand-felt (HF) and tissue softness analyzer (TSA) instrumental measurements of tissue softness. The research was conducted in three phases, which are discussed separately. In the phase one study, results indicated that systematic collection of samples and preparation of test specimens were the foundation of successful tests. TSA-HF and tensile strength exhibited a strong negative correlation. In the future, same-unit physical properties can provide a basis for discuss-ing the commonality and complementary natures of hand-felt and TSA softness measurements. In phase two, through the reciprocal matrix approach, subjective softness assessments performed by humans were reliably quan-tified. The quantified values were further applied to a statistical analysis using the t-test to distinguish and train pro-fessional panelists. In phase three of HF panel test results, all independent panels were compared to one another under a uniform scale established by four standard samples. The calibrated HF panel values were incorporated with TSA-HF results to establish technical curves between the softness and tensile strength, which were helpful for onsite workers to carry out process controls.

A novel approach for determining the reactivity of dissolving pulp based on the COD method
ABSTRACT: A novel approach for determining the reactivity of dissolving pulp according to the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of water has been discussed. First, a sample of dissolving pulp was subjected to mercerization and xanthation in order to obtain dissolved cellulose fractions. Next, the fractions were digested with a testing solution as applied in COD procedures. Finally, the resulting liquid was rapidly tested by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis). By quantifying the absorbance of Cr3+ at a wavelength of 600 nm, the reactivity of dissolving pulp was indirectly calculated. The results measured by this novel COD method correlated well with the most accepted Fock test results with less than 10% relative difference. Meanwhile, this newly developed COD method required less time-consuming procedures as compared to the Fock test.
