Displacement washing of softwood pulp cooked to various levels of residual lignin content, TAPPI Journal September 2021
ABSTRACT: This study investigates the influence of the degree of delignification of kraft spruce pulp cooked at seven different kappa numbers, ranging from 18.1 to 50.1, on the efficiency of displacement washing under laboratory conditions. Although the pulp bed is a polydispersive and heterogeneous system, the correlation dependence of the wash yield and bed efficiency on the Péclet number and the kappa number of the pulp showed that washing efficiency increased not only with an increasing Péclet number, but also with an increasing kappa number. The linear dependence between the mean residence time of the solute lignin in the bed and the space time, which reflects the residence time of the wash liquid in the pulp bed, was found for all levels of the kappa number. Washing also reduced the kappa number and the residual lignin content in the pulp fibers.

Effects of phosphogypsum whiskers modification with calcium stearate and their impacts on properties of bleached softwood paper sheets, TAPPI Journal September 2021
ABSTRACT: By combining the structural properties and characteristics of phosphogypsum whiskers, a preliminary study on the modification of phosphogypsum whiskers and their application in papermaking was carried out. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, and reaction concentration on the solubility and retention of modified phosphogypsum whiskers and the effects of phosphogypsum whiskers on the physical properties of paper under different modified conditions were explored. The research results show that, after the phosphogypsum whiskers are modified with calcium stearate, a coating layer will be formed on the surface of the whiskers, which effectively reduces the solubility of the phosphogypsum whiskers. The best modification conditions are: the amount of calcium stearate relative to the absolute dry mass of the phosphogypsum whisker is 2.00%; the modification time is 30 min, and the modification temperature is 60°C. The use of modified phosphogypsum whiskers for paper filling will slightly reduce the whiteness, folding resistance, burst resistance, and tensile strength of the paper, but the tearing degree and retention of the filler will be increased to some extent.

Black liquor evaporators upgrade — How many effects?, TAPPI Journal April 2023
ABSTRACT: Black liquor evaporation is generally the most energy intensive unit operation in a pulp and paper manufacturing facility. The black liquor evaporators can represent a third or more of the total mill steam usage, followed by the paper machine and digester. When considering an evaporator rebuild or a new system, the key design question is how many effects to include in the system. The number of effects is the main design feature that deter-mines the economy of the system and the steam usage for a given evaporation capacity. A higher number of effects increases steam economy and reduces energy cost to a point, but additional effects also have higher initial capital cost and increased power costs. This research paper uses life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) as a method to determine the optimum number of evaporator effects for a new evaporator system. The same basic principles and method can also apply to existing evaporator rebuild projects.

ABTRACT: Originating in the field of scientific research and academia, poster sessions at conferences may date back to the mid-20th century, although the origins aren’t quite clear. Some sources have said as early as the 1950s and others later, while the term “poster session” itself may not have been coined until the 1975 American Physics Conference. The original concept behind poster sessions was to provide a platform for researchers to share their work in a more visual and interactive format as compared to the traditional long-form oral presentation.

SCC susceptibility of chromized type 409 stainless steel in alkaline chloride solutions at ambient temperature and pressure, TAPPI Journal August 2023
ABSTRACT: Biomass hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is operated in a harsh reaction medium that contains hot pressurized water, inorganic acidic or basic catalyst, and inorganic/organic corrosive components released during the conversion. Candidate alloys for this application require suitable resistance to both corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) to withstand the HTL process conditions (250°C•374°C and 4•22 MPa). Ferritic iron-chromium (Fe-Cr) steels are more prone to corrosion but less susceptible to SCC compared to austenitic iron-chromium-nickel (Fe-Cr-Ni) steels. Chromizing can significantly reduce corrosion of Type 409 stainless steel (Fe-11Cr) in a simulated aqueous HTL solution. The objective of this study is to determine the SCC susceptibility of chromized Type 409 stainless steel, relative to the bare (non-chromized) case. The slow strain rate testing (SSRT) technique was used for this purpose. For simplicity of experimentation, SSRT was conducted using simulated HTL water containing 800 ppm potassium chloride (KCl), 1 M potassium carbonate (K2CO3), and 10 wt% acetic acid at ambient temperature and pressure. Complementary potentiodynamic polarization measurements and surface analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectros-copy (XPS) were also made to help interpret the SSRT results. The SSRT results show no significant difference in SCC susceptibility, regardless of the starting surface. Thus, chromizing, while significantly reducing the corrosion of Type 409 stainless steel, does not adversely affect SCC susceptibility, at least under the conditions tested.

Quantification of block testing for coated paper substrates, TAPPI Journal November 2024
ABSTRACT: Block resistance is a critical property for coated paper and board substrate that will be rolled, stacked, or otherwise contact itself after coating. Small differences in the coated substrate’s blocking can determine whether the substrate can be successfully used for its designated purpose. However, this crucial property is typically evaluated using a qualitative scale that is based on subjective operator ratings and impacted by factors that include: (1) sound of coated substrate during separation, and (2) force with which substrates are separated. This paper tests the hypothesis that quantifying the block test by measuring the force required to peel samples apart improves the test by: (1) providing more standardized testing conditions by controlling peel force and rate; (2) more clearly differentiating samples that experience minimal to some blocking; and (3) maintaining customizability to evaluate customer-specific test conditions. The method developed in this study uses a standard block tester and block testing conditions, but it peels the coated paper samples using a hot tack/heat seal instrument with force measurement capabilities. This paper demonstrates, using the instrument’s heat seal capabilities, that it can measure peel forces that represent the full range of observable block scores. The efficacy of this method was evaluated by having a group of trained operators engage in a randomized, blind experiment where they assessed block resistance on a set of coated paper samples using a modified qualitative block scale and compared their results to force measurements collected using the proposed method. The sample set included two coatings that have successfully run in commercial trials with minimal blocking, and one coating that experienced significant blocking in commercial trials despite only exhibiting some blocking at standard block test conditions in laboratory testing. The quantitative test method presented in this paper clearly differentiated these samples, whereas the qualitative assessment could not predict which samples had suitable block resistance for commercial use. As any tensile tester capable of measuring with 0.1 N resolution can be used for the Quantitative Block Test, the proposed method can be widely adopted. Furthermore, this method can be used for any block condition.

Test method and coating composition impact on measured moisture vapor transmission rate for waterborne coatings on paper, TAPPI Journal November 2024
ABSTRACT: Moisture vapor barrier is one of the necessary performance attributes for paper packages. Two methods are typically employed to assess the moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR): the gravimetric cup method (ASTM E96) and the MOCON method (ASTM F1249). While those tests have been compared for free standing polymeric films, less is understood about their application in coated paper. Our results show that, despite a general agreement between the two methods, discrepancies exist where test protocols and material properties of coated paper impact the MVTR measurement. The measurement discrepancies can be explained by differences in local moisture concentration. Our study provides new insights on moisture vapor barrier assessment of waterborne coatings on paper and implications for achieving paper packages with improved barrier performance.

Evaluation of folding effects on coating damage, TAPPI Journal November 2024
ABSTRACT: Barrier coatings on paperboard need to maintain integrity during converting and end-use for effective barrier performance. Folding is one of the most common deformations during converting; however, factors that affect damage during folding are not well defined. This is partly because methods to fold specimens and characterize damage are not standardized and the results are generally not transferable. In this work, we describe a method to fold paper specimens precisely and reproducibly. The keys to folding include using a defined geometry and controlled deformation. Multiple methods can be used to quantify damage; in this case, we use differences in permeability as a measure of how the coating becomes more open. Damage is sensitive to the degree of compression after the initial folding. Using a shim for support provides a defined amount of compression and minimizes the sensitivity to the applied pressure.
