Toward environmental resilience in pulp and paper manufacturing: Water consumption and carbon dioxide emission reductions, TAPPI Journal September 2025

ABSTRACT: Pulp and paper manufacturing is a water- and energy-intensive industrial sector, necessitating improvement of its operational efficiency, as well as reduction of emissions to the maximum extent possible. This review focuses on the reduction of water consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that originate in the pulp and paper industry (PPI). First, process simulation and optimization techniques used for water consumption reduction are reviewed. Then, techno-economic analyses of solvent-based CO2 capture from PPI are discussed. Additionally, key actions are proposed for enhancing water consumption reduction and CO2 capture in PPI.

Understanding the energy and emission implications of new technologies in a kraft mill: Insights from a CADSIM Plus simulation model, TAPPI Journal June 2024

ABSTRACT: Kraft mills play a vital role in energy transition because they have significant potential to reduce their own energy utilization and produce energy/products to decarbonize other sectors. Through biomass combustion and potential biogenic carbon emissions capture, these mills can contribute to offsetting emissions from other sectors. This research investigates the departmental and cross-departmental implications of technology upgrades on energy, steam, emissions, water, and chemicals using a CADSIM Plus simulation model. The model provides a comprehensive analysis of mass and energy balances, offering valuable insights into the benefits and limitations of each technology. The model facilitates scenario analysis and comparisons of process configurations, enabling data-driven decision-making for sustainable and competitive operations. Six high-impact technologies, including additional evaporator effects, weak black liquor membrane concentration, belt displacement washer for brownstock washing, oxygen delignification, and improvements to the pulp machine shoe press and vacuum pumps, are evaluated. Individual technologies resulted in energy savings of 1.2% to 5.4%, biomass consumption reductions of 8.6% to 31.6%, and total emissions reductions of 1.6% to 5.9%. Strategic decision-making must consider existing mill limitations, future technology implementation, and potential production increases. Future research will explore product diversification, biorefineries, and pathways to achieve carbon-negative operations, aiming to reduce emissions and secure a competitive future for kraft mills.

Pulp and paper mills: The original biorefineries — past performance and limitations to future opportunities, TAPPI Journal October 2023

ABSTRACT: Pulp mills have been biorefineries since the invention of the Tomlinson recovery boiler. Unfortunately, the paper industry has done a poor job explaining that concept to the general public. A number of bioproducts in everyday use have been produced by pulp mills for several decades, and new products are routinely being developed. Modern research efforts over the last couple of decades have focused on producing even more products from pulp and paper mills through capacity enhancement and the development of value-added products and liquid transportation fuels to enhance paper mill profitability. Some of these efforts, often referred to as modern biorefineries, have focused so heavily on product development that they have ignored operating and process realities that limit the transformation of pulp and paper mills from the current limited number of bioproducts produced today to economic scale production of these value-added products. In this paper, several of these limitations are addressed. In addition, there are several supply chain, marketing, product quality, and economic realities limiting the value potential for these wholesale conversions of pulp mills into multiproduct modern biorefineries. Finally, the conservative nature and capital intensity of the pulp and paper industries provide a difficult hurdle for conversion to the modern biorefinery concept. These issues are also reviewed.

Evaporation of process water from recycled containerboard mills, TAPPI Journal July 2023

ABSTRACT: The reduction of the specific effluent discharge volumes of paper mills leads to concentrated process waters that are difficult to treat. Evaporation is an effective water reclamation technology; however, its feasibility largely depends on the fouling behavior of the calcium rich process water. A pilot plant study was conducted to investigate fouling of an evaporator processing the production water from a recycled containerboard mill. The evaporator was operated continuously for five weeks at an evaporation temperature of 55°C and a differential temperature of 5°C, and with a recovery rate of approximately 90%. The calcium ion concentration of the circulating liquor exceeded 7,000 mg/L with a pH of 6. Despite the high fouling potential of the circulating liquor, the heat transfer coefficient did not decline over the investigated trial. The absence of deposits on large areas of the heating surfaces demonstrate that the process water does not generally form deposits under the conditions that were investigated. Calcium sulfate deposits were only found in areas where there was inadequate coverage of liquid over the heating surfaces. The findings show that evaporators can be used to effectively close the water system of recycled containerboard mills without fouling impacting the energy efficiency.

Pilot scale black liquor concentration using pressure driven membrane separation, TAPPI Journal April 2023

ABSTRACT: Black liquor concentration using pressure driven membrane separation has long been proposed as a means of achieving energy savings and breaking production bottlenecks. To date, limitations in membrane performance and stability under black liquor process conditions have prevented those promises from being realized out-side of tightly controlled laboratory settings. In this work, we describe the first successful pilot scale field deployments of a membrane system for black liquor concentration. Using a purpose-built system and commercial sized, spiral wound graphene oxide membrane elements, we have logged nearly 6000 h of runtime across deployments to multiple mill sites. We demonstrate concentration of black liquor from 14% to >20% total solids, while generating permeate water comparable in quality to that of evaporator condensate and an 81% reduction in energy consumption relative to evaporation. At a commercial scale, these results translate to $2 M/year in net energy savings for a typical mill, as well as an opportunity to support production increases or mill expansions. These results represent a significant leap forward in the ability of membrane systems to deliver substantial value via black liquor concentration.

Dissolution of wood components during hot water extraction of spruce, TAPPI Journal May 2023

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the autohydrolysis of softwood, which is the main chemical operation in both hot water extraction and steam explosion. Control of the process and monitoring its course were ensured by the careful choice of experimental setup and conditions: a milled spruce material was extracted in a small flow-through reactor to minimize degradation of the dissolved material and to enable analysis of the resulting liquors extracted at selected time points. The obtained liquid and solid fractions were analyzed for sugar composition and acetic acid concentration. The results showed that partially degraded hemicelluloses were extracted; hemicelluloses side chains were cleaved off and detected as monomers, while deacetylation was limited. Chain scissions of cellulose were observed as a result of autohydrolysis.

Black liquor evaporators upgrade — How many effects?, TAPPI Journal April 2023

ABSTRACT: Black liquor evaporation is generally the most energy intensive unit operation in a pulp and paper manufacturing facility. The black liquor evaporators can represent a third or more of the total mill steam usage, followed by the paper machine and digester. When considering an evaporator rebuild or a new system, the key design question is how many effects to include in the system. The number of effects is the main design feature that deter-mines the economy of the system and the steam usage for a given evaporation capacity. A higher number of effects increases steam economy and reduces energy cost to a point, but additional effects also have higher initial capital cost and increased power costs. This research paper uses life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) as a method to determine the optimum number of evaporator effects for a new evaporator system. The same basic principles and method can also apply to existing evaporator rebuild projects.

Editorial: PEERS 2023 Poster Session: a competition for students and young professionals, TAPPI Journal April 2023

ABTRACT: Originating in the field of scientific research and academia, poster sessions at conferences may date back to the mid-20th century, although the origins aren’t quite clear. Some sources have said as early as the 1950s and others later, while the term “poster session” itself may not have been coined until the 1975 American Physics Conference. The original concept behind poster sessions was to provide a platform for researchers to share their work in a more visual and interactive format as compared to the traditional long-form oral presentation.
