Mill experience of calcium carbonate scale formation in green liquor pipelines, TAPPI Journal August 2020
ABSTRACT: Experience of hard calcite (CaCO3) scale formation in green liquor pipelines at four kraft pulp mills was systematically investigated to determine if there is any correlation between the severity of the scaling problem at each mill and the design and operating conditions of its causticizing plant. The results show that the high degree of supersaturation of calcium ions (Ca2+) in the liquor is the main contributing factor. Mills that operate at a lower green liquor total titratable alkali (TTA), higher causticity, and a larger liquor temperature drop are more likely to produce a green liquor that is supersaturated with Ca2+, and thus experience more severe scaling problems. In order to minimize CaCO3 scaling, the green liquor handling equipment should be operated as steady as possible to avoid conditions that allow Ca2+ to be supersaturated. The strategies include minimizing variations in liquor TTA, insulating the green liquor pipelines to reduce temperature gradients, and adding lime mud to weak wash to provide seeds for precipitation to occur on mud particles instead of on metal substrate.

On-machine visible dirt measurement on moving sheets and the relationships to standard laboratory methods, TAPPI Journal August 2020
ABSTRACT: There has been a proliferation of new sensors to measure on-machine dirt specks that employ different technologies and methodologies to perform measurements. The differences in the on-machine technologies are discussed in terms of the TAPPI and ISO standard laboratory test methods with respect to dirt detection using light reflected from, or light transmitted through, the sheet. Also discussed are the requirements for measuring sta-tistically representative areas of the sheet; the difference between the dirt physical size and Equivalent Black Area (EBA) size; and the implication of these issues when specifying cleanliness acceptance criteria.This technical brief describes on-machine visible dirt measurement’s relationship to standard laboratory testing.

Relating bending stiffness measurements across various free span lengths, TAPPI Journal August 2020
ABSTRACT: Bending stiffness should be an intrinsic property of a material, so it is puzzling that the TAPPI Standard Test Method T 836 “Bending stiffness, four point method” specifies span lengths when testing different types of corrugated fiberboard. These specified spans often limit the samples that can be measured with this method. To better understand the relationship between bending stiffness and span length, we performed measurements on a range of materials at different spans. The results provide a practical tool enabling comparison of bending stiffness measurements made at various span lengths. Additionally, this note discusses several areas that could serve as the foundation for more fundamental work exploring the bending behavior of corrugated board.

Effects of orders of addition in nanocellulose•cationic starch• colloidal silica systems for papermaking, TAPPI Journal October 2022
ABSTRACT: Two orders of addition were compared when preparing paper handsheets from recycled copy paper furnish in combination with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), cationic starch, colloidal silica, and cationic retention aid (cPAM; cationic polyacrylamide). Faster dewatering and higher fine-particle retention were obtained at equal optimized dosages of additives when the colloidal silica was added last, after addition of the cPAM. The same order of addition also provided a higher gain in the paper’s tensile strength. However, higher paper stiffness was achieved when the colloidal silica was instead added to the NFC, after its pretreatment with cationic starch. Results were consistent with the principle that papermaking additives added shortly before sheetforming tend to have the largest effects on drainage and retention. The results also demonstrated a sensitivity to the relative dosages of positively and negatively charged additives.

Extensive function of green synthesized titania nanoparticles: Photodegradation of Congo red, TAPPI Journal September 2023
ABSTRACT: Several extensive research studies have explored the advantages of green templates in the synthesis of structure and morphology-controlled photocatalytic nanomaterials. This paper compares the abilities of zingiber rhizome extract (ZE) and tapioca starch extracts (TS) in modifying the surface and optical properties of titania nanoparticles (TNP) synthesized by solgel technique. The synthesized nanocatalysts were characterized using various physicochemical techniques. While zingiber (ginger) extract effectively promotes the formation of dual anatase and rutile phases, tapioca extract supports formation of the single anatase phase of titania. These two extracts were examined for the degradation of Congo red in the presence of sunlight. The photomineralization and recyclability of catalysts were evaluated through total organic content analysis. The easy recovery and reusability of zingiber and tapioca biomasses, along with good control over the growth of nanoparticles, enable them to be implicit novel green templates in the successful synthesis of photoactive mesoporous nanotitania.

Pilot scale black liquor concentration using pressure driven membrane separation, TAPPI Journal April 2023
ABSTRACT: Black liquor concentration using pressure driven membrane separation has long been proposed as a means of achieving energy savings and breaking production bottlenecks. To date, limitations in membrane performance and stability under black liquor process conditions have prevented those promises from being realized out-side of tightly controlled laboratory settings. In this work, we describe the first successful pilot scale field deployments of a membrane system for black liquor concentration. Using a purpose-built system and commercial sized, spiral wound graphene oxide membrane elements, we have logged nearly 6000 h of runtime across deployments to multiple mill sites. We demonstrate concentration of black liquor from 14% to >20% total solids, while generating permeate water comparable in quality to that of evaporator condensate and an 81% reduction in energy consumption relative to evaporation. At a commercial scale, these results translate to $2 M/year in net energy savings for a typical mill, as well as an opportunity to support production increases or mill expansions. These results represent a significant leap forward in the ability of membrane systems to deliver substantial value via black liquor concentration.
