Editorial: TAPPI Journal research highlights from 2019, TAPPI Journal January 2020

ABSTRACT: As we move into 2020, it's interesting to look back at the research topics that were covered in TAPPI Journal (TJ) the previous year. Members of the TJ editorial board organized diverse special issues on lignin, coating ,forming, and diverse papermaking and biorefinery topics, which are discussed in the following sections.

Editorial: Risks and rewards of research during a pandemic, TAPPI Journal August 2020

ABSTRACT: For universities and research institutions, the arrival of Covid-19 last spring halted activities around the world while exposing the need for detailed Public Health Emergency (PHE) plans to cope with a highly-contagious virus in laboratory and classroom settings. As classroom work switched to online platforms like Zoom, the reality set in that long-term plans were needed to safely keep students learning, research flowing, and universities financially stable.

Production of antimicrobial paper using nanosilver, nanocellulose, and chitosan from a coronavirus perspective, TAPPI Journal July 2021

ABSTRACT: The pulp and paper industry has an opportunity to play a vital role in breaking the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic through production that supports widespread use of antimicrobial paper. This paper provides a brief review of paper and paper-related industries, such as those producing relevant additives, and R&D organizations that are actively engaged in developing antimicrobial papers. The focus here is on the potential of three nano-additives for use in production of antimicrobial papers that combat coronavirus: nanosilver, nanocellulose, and chitosan. Various recent developments in relevant areas and concepts underlining the fight against coronavirus are also covered, as are related terms and concepts.

Alternative “green” lime kiln fuels: Part II—Woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification, and hydrogen, TAPPI Journal May 2020

ABSTRACT: This paper is the second of a two-part series on “green” lime kiln fuels. The first part of this work reviews the use of pulp mill and recovery byproducts as either full or partial replacement of oil or natural gas in the kiln. The second part reviews the use of various forms of woody biomass, bio-oils, gasification and hydrogen as potential carbon neutral or carbon-free lime kiln fuels. Several of these options require specialized burners to supply the fuel to the kiln and high-quality metallurgy to withstand the acidic conditions of the fuel.

Editorial: Special issue showcases new additive approaches for a lignocellulose-based future, TAPPI Journal January 2024

ABSTRACT: Lignocellulose-derived materials are inherently renewable and are of benefit not only through their recyclability and biodegradability, but also from carbon sequestration during the production of the base raw material. With regulatory agencies tightening restrictions and consumer habits slowly shifting, the paper industry is well positioned to fill a market need for renewable bio-based materials. Although the inherent benefits of lignocellulose-based products are many, all too often, the end-product does not meet the required performance or cost in use desired by end-users. This creates obstacles for a more renewable economy that relies less on petroleum-derived products.

Tetraethyl orthosilicate-containing dispersion coating — water vapor and liquid water barrier properties, TAPPI Journal September 2021

ABSTRACT: An aqueous styrene-butadiene latex dispersion coating containing in-situ processed tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) applied on paperboard demonstrated improved water barrier performance. Coatings containing TEOS equivalent to 0.8% silicon dioxide (SiO2; dry basis) exhibited water vapor performance of < 25 g/m2/day (23°C, 50% relative humidity [RH]) and liquid water barrier performance Cobb 1800 s of < 6 g/m2, when applied as a single-layer 18 g/m2 coating. Cobb 1800 s barrier performance was still good (< 11 g/m2) at coat weights of 7–10 g/m2. The use of filler materials such as kaolin improved the vapor barrier properties of the coating, but this was not critical to the liquid water barrier properties.
