Coating and Lamination in Packaging Applications

Participants will spend the morning in lecture and the afternoon in a hands-on lab experience on state-of-the-art equipment. Lunch and morning refreshments will be included on both days.

  • Understand coating and lamination fundamentals and their applications
  • Recognize the various types of coaters and laminators and their applications
  • Understand workflow and unit operations
  • Recognize the raw materials and their properties, and learn their influences on the final products
  • Understand test basics
  • Apply the knowledge in operation and quality control
Who Should Attend 

You should attend if you are seeking a better understanding of the paper industry in order to improve your on-the-job performance. Particularly appropriate for newcomers, machine operators, operating managers, financial managers, sales representatives, maintenance workers, training, and development staff.

What to Expect

The attendees divide into teams to perform tasks on the machine. The teams will rotate between the machine and the control room. This will provide the team with opportunities to discuss their observations and experiences with the facilitator and plan for the next task to be performed.

UWSP's Paper Science and Chemical Engineering department organizes these courses. PS&ChE faculty and staff serve as instructors.​

Roland Gong

Roland Gong teaches paper science and chemical engineering courses at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. In 2013, Gong earned a Ph.D. degree in Paper and Printing Science and Engineering at Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI), where he also obtained his master’s degree in the same program in 2010. His research interests concentrate on paper coating and converting, paper recycling, packaging, and pioneer technologies in the paper industry. He has ten years of industrial experience in the areas of paper, packaging, and printing, where he worked on new materials applications and process optimizations.

Registration Cancellation Policy

If you have to cancel your training course registration, you must notify TAPPI in writing via email memberconnection@tappi.org prior to the class start date. Refunds will be provided according to the following scale:

  • 100% refund if notice is received by May 9, 2024.
  • 50% refund if notice is received between May 10, 2024 and May 22, 2024
  • No refund will be issued for notice received on May 23, 2024 or after

There is no refund of fees due to failure to attend without notice.

Substitutions will be accepted at any time without penalty.

Course Cancellation Policy
It is UWSP’s intent to avoid cancelling or rescheduling any training course. However, we reserve the right to cancel or change a training course at any time, for reasons including, but not limited to, insufficient registration, instructor emergencies, or other issues beyond our control.

If UWSP cancels a training course, registered students will be notified no less than 10 business days before the scheduled start day of the course. In the case of a cancellation by UWSP, 100 percent of registration fees will be refunded to students, or the students may elect to substitute the fees for another UWSP training course.
