Longstanding Partnership Creates Learning Opportunities

TAPPI has a longstanding tradition of working closely with global associations and organizations in the pulp, paper, and converting industry, including the Finnish Forest Products Engineers’ Association, a network for professionals and corporations in the bio-forest industry.

In the early 2000s, the two organizations worked together to produce the Papermaking Science and Technology book series, a comprehensive, 20-volume textbook set that examines and explains the entire paper manufacturing process from wood raw material to end product. The series has stood the test of time. Now in its second edition, the texts provide a basis for university-level education, updating training courses, and handbooks for anyone in the industry.

The Papermaking Science and Technology series is also the foundation for ForestBioFacts, the Finnish Forest Products Engineers’ Association’s new digital learning platform.

ForestBioFacts updates and modernizes the scope of the comprehensive series with a shift toward nanocellulose, energy, textiles and biofuels. Over 150 top professionals from academia and industry have contributed to the 16 modules covering the whole forest-based bioeconomy value chain.

ForestBioFacts features scientific and practical content with over 1,500 articles and 300 videos. The modules combine interviews, videos and articles from companies to bring the theory closer to practice. It includes a Glossary for common terms and a six-language dictionary on pulp and papermaking.

The platform is ideal for university students, new employees as a part of on-boarding, technical professionals in R&D and in production, and professionals in sales and business development.

The two organizations also co-hosted a webinar, “Innovating Renewable Materials for the Future” in March 2021.  Designed to bring the latest updates in sustainability issues and renewable materials, Finnish Forest Products Engineers’ Association’s Managing Director Antti Linqvist moderated a discussion between Kim Nelson, Chief Technical Officer Nanocellulose, GranBio USA, and Lauri Lehtonen, Head of Innovation, Stora Enso Biomaterials.
