A Spritz of Sustainability: A Green Coating Solution for Packaging

In an era where environmental consciousness is at the forefront, the quest for sustainable packaging solutions has never been more pressing. Paper and board have long been stalwarts in the packaging realm, valued for their recyclability and biodegradability. However, their hydrophilic and porous nature necessitates enhancements to achieve optimal barrier properties, especially crucial in food packaging to ward off gases, grease, and oils. Traditionally, achieving these barrier properties involved layers of non-renewable, petroleum-based materials. While effective, they pose significant environmental challenges and hinder the recyclability of fiber-based packaging.

Naturally occurring biopolymers, like alginate and chitosan, can be a green alternative to petroleum-based materials. They exhibit impressive oxygen and oil barrier capabilities when applied to paper substrates and do not impede recyclability. However, they can be difficult to apply using conventional paper coating equipment due to their high viscosity at low solids content. Alternative application methods must be explored.

On April 28, Wolfgang Bauer, Graz University of Technology, will present, “Comparison of the application of polysaccharide-based barrier coatings on paper using film press and spray coating,” during TAPPI’s 2024 Advanced Coating Symposium in Cleveland, Ohio. Bauer will highlight how utilizing a spray application for biopolymers can overcome many of the obstacles faced with traditional coating methods. Attendees will learn how this new method allows for multi-layering on the wet web during paper production, conserving drying energy and potentially integrating seamlessly into existing industrial processes.

Advanced Coating Symposium (ACS)
ACS serves as a platform for industry experts, researchers, and professionals to discuss and explore the latest advancements in coating technology. Held in conjunction with TAPPICon 2024, the event will take place at the Hilton Hotel in Cleveland and features expert-led presentations delivered within three sessions: Unique Coating Considerations, Barrier Coating Concepts, and Important Barrier Coating Considerations. Attendees can also enjoy meeting new and old business contacts during the Symposium luncheon and the popular Hagemeyer Happy Hour.
