Engineering Division Charles B. Tibbits Memorial Scholarship

Emma Smith is a junior at the University of Maine. She is studying Chemical Engineering with the intent to obtain a certificate in Pulp and Paper Management. She is certified as a Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt, a certification which she obtained through the University of Maine in 2019. Emma is a member of UMaine’s TAPPI/PIMA chapter and is active with the university’s AIChE student chapter, even serving a term as the group’s vice president. In 2019, Emma planned, fundraised, and attended a two-week pulp and paper research expedition in Austria and Germany with 11 of her classmates. During the trip, the group toured 11 different pulp and paper related manufacturing facilities. This trip cemented her interest in having a career in the pulp and paper industry upon her May 2021 graduation. She participated in a three-term (12 month) co-op at the Sappi Somerset paper mill where she worked on multiple projects aimed at optimizing a newly rebuilt board machine, including a multi-million dollar cost saving waste reduction project.
